Washington Supreme Court puts gun control measure I-1639 back on November ballot

We’ve said it before: The media’s output has become so ludicrous and detached from common experience – particularly as it concerns law and politics – that it’s difficult at times to determine what it’s even trying to do. This week’s example comes to us courtesy of The New Yorker, a publication that indulges in a variety of genres, including what purport to be analyses of current news, cultural essays, and humor pieces. Their pitch line for would-be subscribers is, “Read something that means something,” with a reference to the outlet’s “award-winning journalism.” But the August 27 issue has an article about President Trump’s latest nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court that is so devoid of value or intellectual rigor that, if it has any meaning at all, it can only be that the publication has erased any distinction between “thought piece” and satire.

Their standard procedure is: immediately misreport basic facts of the incident; unleash the indignation of antigun politicians and celebrities on social media; condemn the NRA and anyone else who offers thoughts and prayers while awaiting reliable information; demand the same types of gun controls that failed to prevent the incident; insist that the gun debate has reached a turning point; and abruptly stop talking about the incident when emotions cool and facts emerge that show how existing gun controls failed.

Anti-gun Senator Accompanied by “Unprecedented” Security Detail While Traveling in California

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is no fan of the Second Amendment. As California attorney general, she sided with local officials who refused to issue concealed carry permits to qualified, law-abiding applicants unless they could demonstrate an extraordinary need to carry a gun beyond concern for personal safety. More recently as a U.S. senator, Harris has co-sponsored legislation to ban firearms and magazines millions of Americans own to defend themselves and their loved ones, including the iconic AR-15.

The Ghosts of Obama’s Operation Choke Point

The Constitution stands as a bulwark against the widest affronts to individual rights. Whenever government powers are expanded, individual rights are diminished, and it is the Constitution, protecting us from our own best intentions, that is supposed to stand in the way of such expansions of government power. This is aggravating to some—people who get frustrated with the Constitution’s “arcane” views on free speech or property rights—or the rights to self-defense and to keep and bear arms, and they work hard at ways to try and sidestep the Constitution’s protections.

New Report on California “Gun Violence Restraining Order” Law

California law, AB 1014, allows a family member or law enforcement officer to obtain a court order – a “gun violence restraining order” (GVRO) – against another person. The order requires the mandatory confiscation, by local law enforcement, of all firearms the restrained person owns, possesses, or has access to. A temporary or emergency order is issued without notice or the opportunity to contest the order by the affected person, and is effective for 21 days pending a second court hearing. At this full hearing, where the affected person has a right to appear and answer the allegations, the court may either terminate the 21-day order or extend the gun ban by issuing a one-year GVRO. A court may renew such one-year orders indefinitely, leading to a potential lifetime gun ban. A restrained person who violates a GVRO commits a criminal offense and, in addition to the other penalties, faces an additional, mandatory five-year gun ban, which begins to run once the existing GVRO expires.
