Tss 4s, 20 ga 870....what choke?

I'm not interested in stirring up a TSS debate on lethal range. I have a 20 ga 870 that's a joy to carry for turkey. Anyone used 4s for coyote? If so what choke?

Contact derbyacresbob, I think he has used the TSS #4's, though in a 12 gauge. Look for the amount of constriction he used, not "choke", and maybe apply that same constriction or a bit less from your smaller 20 gauge bore as a starting place.

I ran a lot of TSS #4, 2-3/4", 1-5/8 oz. loads in my 12 gauge this past season. Patterned too tight with .055 constriction, I liked the .050 constriction patterns better and that's what I hunted with. Killed 'em real good.

.055

.050

It's a pretty forgiving load in my gun, .040 is totally acceptable too.

I used up all the #4 I had on coyotes and it did work very well. I prefer #2's with .055 though and went back to them after I ran out of #4.

The TSS #4 shot has worked good on coyotes for me out of Carlson's Extended Sporting Clays chokes in Modified and IMP/MOD.

TSS shot is perfectly round and stays round so it patterns much tighter than most lead shot loads.

The below is from KPY Shotshell Ballistic program. I use 3.70" of gel penetration for killing and knocking down coyotes. KPY recomends 2.50" of gel penetration for killing big geese.

1250 fps lead BB shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 43.7 yards with 51 pellets in 1 oz.

1250 fps TSS #4 shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 76 yards with 83 pellets in 1 oz.

I don't plan on shooting coyotes at over 50 yards away but that extra penetration sure helps when the shot angles are not good at 50 yards and under.

1 oz of TSS #6 shot at 1250 fps gets 2.50" of gel penetration at 83.5 yards with 137 pellets in the 1 oz load.

12 ga 3" 1-1/4 oz steel shot load
1-1/4 oz of Steel BB shot at 1500 fps gets 2.50" of gel penetration at 39.4 yards with 89 pellets in the 3" 12 ga 1-1/4 oz load.

You could load a fast 7/8 oz 20 ga load with either the TSS #6 or #7 shot and have a great goose load.

7/8 oz of TSS #7 shot would still have about 159 pellets per shell, that is 70 more pellets than the 12 ga 3" 1-1/4 oz BB load has.
