Just got a remington 700 in 17 rem and need a place to start developing a load for it. I've got a box of 25 grain V-max but am unsure of a powder. I'd really appreciate any input.

I don't go after anything larger than prairie dogs with my .17 Remington so I stick with the lighter (and faster) 20 grain Vmax bullets. I have taken prairie pooches as far as 450 yards with it and it kills well. Shoot one under 100 yards (with a 4400 launch speed) and holy moly! What a blow up!

23 to 23.5 grains of Varget works for me. I like the CCI BR primer but they have gotten very expensive as of late so I have been using the standard CCI SR cap and it works fine.

I as well have one on the way, a CZ. After a ton of research on this site this is what I have come up with by taking down every load, every powder, every primer, every bullet used.

After comparing all the load data I have written down from the members here the powder of choice was IMR 4320, the primer was Rem 7 1/2, and with a very small bullet selection the bullet was a 25gr Hornady HP. So...I have worked up several test loads with the powder measurments that have brought great success to the 17 Rem shooters:

IMR 4320 at 23.5gr COAL 2.20
IMR 4320 at 24.0gr COAL 2.20
IMR 4320 at 24.2gr COAL 2.20
IMR 4320 at 24.5gr COAL 2.20

These are my starting points, I will see how each shoots and then tweek from there.

Every time I would see someones favorite load for the 17 Rem I would jot it down, then I comnpared all the different loads and the above was the most common four loads with the 25gr HP.

Hope this helps! Good luck!!

For 25gr. bullets, IMR4320 has always been a great powder. IMR8208XBR is every bit as good and my powder of choice.

4320 was terrible in my Remington 700. The two powders that worked for me were IMR 3031 and Varget. My rifle also didn't like 20 grain bullets, likes the 25 Hornady's.

Yeah, me too. I thought for a while there that my Remington was never going to be a good shooter until I tried the Varget loads. The Hornady book showed their best accuracy with the Vmax and Varget and I tried it and Bingo! Half inch 100 yard 5 shot groups!

25gr.bergers and varget.30 grainers work too.the 25.gr. bullet has killed 800 or so coyotes out to 400yds.one shot, very fur friendly.berger is the only one that is very effective.hornadys work only fair, rem bullets fair, never used noslers because the bergers work so well.starks worked but were to hard to get. i use rem 7 1/2 primers

4320 with a 25 grain bullet has worked well for me in multiple rifles. IME primers make a difference to group size in the .17 Remingtons. Typically I get the best group I can out of a bullet and powder combination then try different primers typicaly I find the group size will change.

24.5 4320 with hornady 25 gr hp, and rem 7 1/2's are what my 700 likes the best.

Well mine seems to like 23gr of H-4895 with remington 71/2 primer and 25gr Berger. Around 4000fps and many groups below .4" with it
