.223 or 5.56 mm

I jusyt got an ar-15, and it says on it 5.56mm. the guy i bought it from gave me 500 rounds of .223 ammo. Are these the same or do i need to get 5.56mm ammo for it.

The .223 will shoot fine in a 5.56 chamber, the reverse is where problems have been found since 5.56 military ammo is slightly hotter the 5.56 chamber is slightly looser in the throat area. While that may sound like it would be detrimental to accuracy it really is not it just allows for better heat control in the firearm.
