In today's Army, being disbanded may mean that you were
Highly Effective but maybe a bit
rowdy or free thinkers! The brass may have been a bit nervous with you studs on the loose!
I dug this up on your 518th...
Later, in April 2004, Leaders of the US Army Reserve 375th Transportation Group under Col Corey Youmans and 812th Transportation Battalion under LTC Tom Sisinyak formed a special provisional unit, the 518th "Gun Truck" Company. Based in Camp Navistar in Kuwait and commanded by Cpt Robert Landry CO(USAR), Lt James McCormick XO (ARNG) and 1SG Jody Cuthbertson (ARNG) , this company acquired 35 humvees and five M939 five-ton trucks, and modified them with improvised armor and .50 calibre machine-guns. Like in Vietnam, the gun truck crews were drawn from the Transportation Corps, in the hope that they would derive extra motivation from protecting their fellow drivers, this unit was disbanded by the 7th Transportation Group under Col Jeff Miser in April, 2005, this was a very unpopular decision and one that is still in question today.
