Places to call near Hampton Roads VA

I'm looking for places within an hour of Hampton VA to call. Private or public land, where I can use my .223. I have all the gear I need. I've been shooting since I was 7 and have been hunting seriously for about three years. And started predator hunting last year after deer season. I just keep odd hours, so I'm free at night(don't sleep much) I get off work after 8pm, so I can't really go door knocking at those times. I'm certainly not looking for anyone to give out there stands, just looking for leads to find my own. Any help would be appreciated.

Most of your public land in that area, such as WMA areas are rimfire only. I suggest you join a Hunt Club in order to access some private property. Good luck.

Surely you don't work 7 days a week????? Print you up some business cards with your name and number along with the title "predator specialist". Include a little cover letter with you card explaining your situation and just go stuffing mail boxes one day in places you want to hunt. There are a lot of farmers out there who rabbit hunt, deer hunt, etc. that want them gone. You'd be suprised how much response you get.

I was stationed down there for a few years, left in 2004. Good luck on finding some place, I never could find much. There is some conservation land up toward Richmond, have to look at the VA website.

If you want to stretch your drive out to a couple of hours shoot me a PM. I have plenty of places to hunt, just need some help getting motivated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you decide to buy yourself a rimfire(22Mag or HMR) or use a shotgun, you could hit the Chicahominy WMA just west of Williamsburg, HWY 5 west. It is hit pretty hard by deer hunters and turkey hunters and other than that, it is left alone. Virgin calling potential. That 223 is a bit much anyway for your indigenous primary targets which is foxes of both species. You will hunt along time in the Hampton Roads area and never even hear a coyote.

Another thing to consider is getting a North Carolina License (about $65 for small game) and heading down Rte 158/165. There are quite a few places in Currituck county and around Elizabeth City. Some public places as well.

As far as Chickahominy, I spoke to the the Game Warden there. Rifles are allowed, from the ground, but not during the open deer firearms season. and from a stand elevated 10 feet from the ground during firearms deer season. unfortunately he also said you can't hunt there at night. Now the former, I've seen in writing, but there is nothing I can find, even on th kiosk there that says anything about not being allowed there at night. I've been deer and turkey hunting there, and have found plenty of dens, tracks and scat. And have called there on the way out after deer hunting. There are plenty out there, just got to go hit the back dove fields.

Not sure on the night/centerfire issue, but you could try out Cavalier WMA in Chesapeake. I haven't tried it yet, but plan on it this week end since it's only 5 minutes from my house. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I went to Cavalier Saturday to go rabbit hunting and just scout around. There is plenty of signs out there for coyote, and some bobcat. I even came across the remains of a four fawns in different areas, that were unfortunate enough to run into some of the predators. As far I can find, it's rimfire and shotgun only in all of Chesapeake. May be an excuse to invest in a .22 mag or a .17 HMR.

I have a lease 500 + - acres in central VA. It is 2.5 hours from VA. beach where I live. Shot a deer last week of the season right at last light and did not try to recover it until the next am. When I found him the rear end was eaten out and both hams were destroyed. I have heard coyotes at night while up there but never seen them. Have seen several fox and bobcats. Would like to try predator hunting but the only weapon I have is a 22. If you would like to teach a novice how to predator hunt I would be glad to take you there. We have several fields [4] and a power line that is 2 miles long Thur our lease. lots of hardwoods and pine thickets.

Cooper is right, there are plenty of guys around here in Central VA that would be willing to help you out, especially since you apparently have the land already. If I were to show you the ropes, I would probably prefer to do it on my land, that I know. Maybe we could swap hunting trips or something. I will send you a PM(Private Message). You'll see the little flashing icon next to your log in button.

I saw on your profile that you are retired. I retired in 2001 as well and I am enjoying it tremendously. I did over thirty years in the military.

I am in Cumberland county and have this lease with 4 other people but they do not hunt except during deer and turkey season.

You are just right up the road from me.

Looks like this thread died. I haven't been able to check in awhile, and haven't had time to go out looking. Has anybody found anything around here
