SoreLoser Crew "Dad's Day"

Well, once again this year my parents made there annual trek to the left coast for there visit and as usual, we loaded up my Dad and put a lot of miles on the Furbuckets in search of some coyotes and cats.

Yesterday was an awesome day as far as the weather goes and an even better day because we managed to take a coyote and a cat. On about our 4th stand of the morning, I had this coyote come from my right side and work his way all the way to the FX5 while "Lightning Jack" was screaming. I had to stop him short of winding where I walked so he wouldn't spook. Unfortunately Dad couldn't get around on him without moving too much so I sealed the deal. Turned out to be 30lb and some change female.

Not long after that we found ourselves in a sweet little spot that had BobCat written all over it. Well wouldn't you know, after a whole 2 minutes of "Lightning Jack" we had a nice big cat come strolling in on my Dad's side. We let the cat work her way all the way to the FX5 and right in front of the camera until we muted the call and let her stop. Dad put the .204 right through the bottom of her chest/heart and she jumped about 3 times like she was on fire, ran about 30yds and gave up the fight. Man those things are tough.

We decided to call lunch after that and then made a couple uneventful stands until this morning. On our second stand of the morning at the 14 minute mark we were getting ready to head out, when my Dad says "HERE HE COMES"... Look out there and no kidding here comes a coyote just loping down to the FX5. We get Dad on him and we let him come to within 20 feet of the FX5 before we make him famous. BAM, Dad put one on the right side of his chest through the right shoulder. He goes into the spin cycle and just to be sure, he gets anchored for good.

We made a couple more stands, called in 6 more coyotes that for some reason or another managed to whoop our butts by either coming in down wind or doing 300mph straight to the call and not stopping for a shot. But at least we managed to scrape one out for the old man. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

So all is said and done, a couple days, a couple states and a couple critters for the picture book and the parents are off to Long Beach harbor to board the Cruise ship for vacation, hmmmmm. Yep, i'd rather be coyote hunting. Thanks Mike, for being there with us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Can't beat that with a stick.

After spending the whole day calling (mostly in the rain or drizzle) without seeing a thing, I'm wishing for southern California desert hunt, or a central Nevada.

One critter per 30 or so stands really stinks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

We sure did work for 'em the last two days but it was a blast spending time with your dad. It was great to have another old guy (besides Ken) to help me kick your butt. Great shootin' dad!

Heli, must be the angle of the pic because it was actually a pretty good sized cat but skinny. Seems like the coyotes have been fat this year and the cats, although plentiful have been thin.

Tim that was a good hunt and story. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Taking your dad coyote calling has got to be pretty special. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif So did Mike get some filming done? That bobcat must not of read up on calling bobcats, it showed up way too quick.

What an awesome time with your Dad /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Oh, and Mike to /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Good on you for taking your dad out. I wish my dad was into hunting. Oh well some of the old dudes that I hunt with make it feel like I have pops there with me

Are you miked for play by play for your video?

Very nice! The older I get the more sentimental I am, the thought of sharing a hunt with my dad, wife, or daughter means more to me than what I pull the trigger on. It makes it that much better if you can share the hunt and put something on the ground.

Thanks guys, it's always good to get out with my Dad. Something that only happens once or twice a year since I joined the Marine Corps 12 years ago. There was only two missions for his time here, kill him a cat and kill him a coyote. We accomplished both and got all kills on film.

Since Mike and my Dad are the same age they got along like, well how Senior citizens are supposed to get along. Helping each other stand up, holding each others walker, changing diapers, the same old routine.

Yucca, yes I wear a lapel mic while the camera is rolling.

Bob, obviously he paid for the mistake of not knowing the rules.

Tim: That is one of the better days you could ever have. I know a lot of my best memories center on great rabbit hunts with my dad and brother over some of the best beagles to ever run a rabbit. [beeep], I miss them. Congrats to you and your dad on a great day.

Great story and photos Tim, congrats to your Dad???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Soreloser, your a lucky guy to have a dad you can go hunting with, God bless you both.
By the way, how old is your dad? I hope I'm not older then him lol.

SL,

Great hunt and great photos. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Of all the hunts in my life, I treasure the ones spent with my Dad the most. Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

He's gone on ahead now but one day he and I will hunt together again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I never could get my kids or nephews interested in hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Billy, SL's dad and I are both 52. Like Ken H we both are still eating solid food though. Hunting is so important to us that we have convinced Stoney Point to make a senior citizen walking/shooting stick that fits into a slot on our electric wheelchairs. The bluehairs at the senior home really dig it! Since we sometimes hunt prone on steep hillsides us old guys have learned to take Viagra before a hunt so that when we lay down on a hill if we should start to roll down we will sort of "hang up". Kind of like a kick stand.

Too funny! Get that on video; would make a great TV ad for Viagra. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
