It was my understanding that coyotes have only one litter of pups per year. Domestic dogs come into season a couple of times per year. Why not coyotes?

This is a good question, but it really belongs over in the Biology Forum.

kydogduster,

I would say coyotes have one litter of pups a year because the amount of time it takes them to raise the one litter. The whole process that it involves which is: the pair bonding/mating, denning/gestation/birth,and pup development take several months. Plus the pups often stay with the parents until late fall or early winter. As you can see there is no time for another litter of pups.

NY Yote is right. Domestic dogs don't have to raise and teach their young to hunt and survive. We've bred this instinct out of dogs for the most part. Dogs that revert back to the wild will eventually only cycle once a year, that is if they survive that long. Not many do.
