CODY, Wyo. (AP) — A wolf pack has killed a mountain lion hunter’s hound dog near Cody.

Jason Morrison was hunting in the Sunlight Basin with five hounds early last week. He said the hounds were on a lion’s trail when they came upon a wolf pack eating a bull elk.

‘‘Wolves will not tolerate other dogs and they must have heard the hound dogs working the tracks,’’ Morrison said.

Eight wolf pups were eating the elk, and the adult wolves standing guard attacked and killed his hound, he said.

The four other hounds returned to Morrison and the rest of the hunting party. Morrison said the wolves, ‘‘killed the dog and were tracking the other dogs that turned back to us. As near as I can tell, they probably intended to get them too.’’

Wolf specialist Mike Jimenez of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed the 10-year-old hound was killed by wolves, which had also killed the elk.

‘‘When dogs chase things, that happens,’’ Jimenez said. ‘‘Wolves can be protective. It’s a territorial thing.’’

Wolves have killed hounds in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, he said, adding that’s what happens when hunters and wolves are both tracking in the same area.

Once again the feds defend thier project with"hey thats what wolves do"

I wonder what the feds would have said if Jason Morrison would have shot the wolves and said that what I do when wovles distory and kill my property. Mauser

In Idaho you can kill a wolf for atacking your pet on your property. But you can not kill a wolf for atacking and killing your hunting dog while hunting.

I live just So of Cody. Several weeks ago one of the local ranchers was out cutting firewood. When he was ready to head back to the house he couldn't find his dog. He followed to dogs tracks in the snow and found where the wolves had killed his dog.

I use a decoy dog alot when I'm calling. When I go into area's where I know there's a pack of wolves I always leave my dog at home. It's got to the point that the wolves are so wide spread that I've only taken my dog out several times this year.

Didn't I just read a thread similar to this in the Predator forum? We gonna start another one in this forum? I don't think MJM is gonna like it if it goes bad....

btw-Don't complain to the messager. We let the moderators of this forum make the decisions. Just keep things civil.

However, anyone who thinks it's alright to take the law into their own hands won't get far with this thread.

Just watched a National Geo special on wolves, there was a pack of wolves in India that attacked and killed 46 children,at first they thought i was jackals but they proved it was wolves and the attacks stoped when they killed the wolves in the area,so they guy that got killed up in Canada wasnt the first documanted human killed by wolves, there are 46 documanted cases prior to that one.

Here is a partial list of species that have history of human conflicts, and have also killed people.

Deer
Elk
Wolves
Mountain lion
Tigers
Elephants
Hippo
Cobras
Rattlesnakes
Cape Buffalo
Bison
Black Bear
Grizzley Bears
Polar Bears
Sharks
Alligators
Crocadiles
Leopards
Pit bulls
Rottweilers
Pythons

I'm sure I left off a few. Won't be much left when we get through wiping them all out.

The wolf problem was taken care untill it was turned lose again, bring your dog up with you to Cody area let out to play if he has his shots he has just as much to walk around
as any other animal, but don't let him out of your sight and if he does get attacted by the wolves, put your hands in your pocket, there is nothing you can do about. That is just what wolves do. Dewey

Yep, we have the same problem with alligators and duck dogs down here.

Cormarants eat fish from the catfish ponds.

Black vultures kill a few calves too.

Yellowhammer,
Here are a few more to add to your list:

mosquitoes
ticks
spiders
eels
trees
bees

and worst of all:

people

Note to all;
I've said this before and my opinion on this subject will probably not change. I am convinced that the real motivation for predator reintroduction is to replace you and I, the hunter. Why have hunting as a game management tool when it is not needed as the Wildlands Project becomes complete? Have doubts? Do a Google on the Wildlands Project and draw your own conclusions.

Yellowhammer of the species you listed where any of them cleaned up or should I say commpletey under contol and them put back in the wildes to start killing again? Mauser

Well, alligators for one were on the endangered species list (threatened) at one time I believe.

There are measures to control them now that their numbers have increased.

Deer were almost non-existant in many states from the early 1900's until the 50's. Now they account for a huge number of car collisons, urban nuisance, and "crop damage".

Ya the deer they eat alot but i haven't had one kill any calves. Lots of gaters have some friends in Fl they will eat your dog take a calf but know one re-interduced the gators, they came back do to good management now harvesting some to keep them in check not just sit there and watch them kill. I don't think gators run in packs and cover big areas of land either not a good comparison. Mauser

Not really you can get rid of the gator legally I understand, as they are harvested when there is a problem,I am going by hear say I don't have any here at the Lake or out at the ranch Mauser

It was only AFTER the numbers got up that they could be controlled. I suspect that the same will be true of the wolves.

You would have to go back a few years, but the beaver is another species that was widely re-introduced after it had been almost completely extirpated. Now, I know not many beavers running around attacking people or pets, but they sure cause a lot of property damage. But, they also create some good duck habitat.

Turkeys are probably the biggest success story of species that has been re-introduced, and is still being stocked today. They even have turkeys in places that never had turkeys before. Depending on your perspective, turkeys are the most regal of game birds, or they are rats with feathers.

They have also reintroduced turkey, elk, and big horn sheep. All thing you like to hunt but many wouldnt have the chance if it werent for reintroduction.

The re= introcduction of the Otters here in Mo hase been a big sucess, but they too are hard on the fish ponds, trapping season here on otters has brought out a lot of guys that haven't trapped for years. I go every morning I am in an area that has no limmit on them. Turkeys are good down here but aren't they a hibrid? Many beaver, they don't mix well with the high dollar people and thier young tress around the lake. But again they don't kill in a maner that wolves do. The eagles move through every year here and see a lot of them. I just don't like Wy's attidue of just stand back and let the wolves kill belive me they have hurt the Moose pop bad now you Feds may not agree but they have. Mauser
