The above Bobcat showed up in less than a minute of starting Bay Bee Cottontail. It looks to me like this Bobcat had mange.

4 or 5 minutes later a coyote came running in from behind us on our right and my son shot it with his shogun just before it got over a ridge about 30 yards away.
Then this better-looking Bobcat came in for just a few seconds.

This is my son with the coyote he shot just before it would have gone out of sight.

Two stands later we had two coyotes climb up a very steep ridge. When the first one stopped about 30 yards from my Foxpro I shot it with my 22-250.

I took this picture of my son holding up the coyote I shot with my 22-250. I took this picture down the steep ridge with the sun behind me. You can see my shadow and my son's shadow about 70 yards farther down the ridge just to the left of my son's shotgun barrel.

Later in the day after 3 blank stands we had a male coyote come to Den Mayhem and HP Pup sounds after calling for 25 minutes. I shot him with my shotgun.

The color variation on those cats is interesting. I would have thought cats in the same geographic location would have similar coloring. Thanks for posting. As usual great pics.

Around here the Bobcat colors can vary quite a bit and some have way more spots than others do. Some Bobcats have a lot of red fur and others don't have any red.

That bobcat looks like he is PO'd at the world, Bob!
I've never seen a cat w/mange; lots of coyotes get it down here but we don't have near the number of cats that you do, though.

That darkened face does remind me of a lot of coyotes that turn that color from mange. I'd of loved to put a tranquilizer dart in that one and got a good look at it. I've never seen mange in bobcats here. Have you ever run into one like that other than this one?

I could see that there was something wrong with that Bobcat even before I saw the pictures of it. I have never seen or heard of a Bobcat having mange.

In the second picture of that bobcat, it looks a little like mange right above its tail.

I did a search on it and it does look like Bobcats can have mange.

Yah, could just be coincidence timing of the pic, but the look and stance just kinda says I'm miserable from where I'm sitting. Eyes half open etc... It really stands out against all your other pics of the cats, which are some great shots. Nice to have folks like you that can pull it off so I'[ve got sumthin to look at while I'm inside sick.

Sadly, not nearly as uncommon as I had thought.

hm1996, thanks for posting that link with the information about Bobcat mange in it.

The California government stopping the take of Bobcats when the Bobcat population is at a very high point is not helping lower the Bobcat mange problem.

There is way more Bobcats around here than the government and city folks realize.

Based on all the great bobcat pictures you post, there is no shortage of them in your area, Bob.
I think many state F&W departments need to get out from behind their desks a bit more and spend more time in the field assessing game populations.

You are right about over-protection during peak population periods can only exacerbate the spread of mange, and other diseases. Mother nature will control the population, but may not be the most humane solution.
