6mm Remington Coyote # 3

Well-known member

I have been playing a sort-of cat-n-mouse game with this coyote for a while. It would show up one night, I would hunt the next, and even a couple more nights and nothing. Then last Saturday night I didn't hunt due to having church the next morning, and low and behold it showed up. So, I stayed the next 5 consecutive nights, hoping for a return. It happened last night, the 5th night.

I squeezed the trigger at 0434 this morning. That darn coyote heard me release the rifle safety of all things, and looked my way instantly. Luckily she went back to searching for tidbits. I didn't use a weapon-mounted IR, but rather am using two infrared spot lights. One is a 940nm light that is mounted about 30 yards from where the coyote fell, and the other is an 850nm light that is mounted about 45 yards (in the cabin yard). Once I deployed the 850 light, I was like Burnsome and didn't let time go by. I shot quickly, afraid the coyote might look toward the cabin and see the red glow. The 940 light does not give off any glow at all that I can see and is pure stealth. Both lights have 198 LED's each.

Here is the view this morning while looking out the cabin door. The white arrow points to where the coyote fell.

Here is the outfit used. The rifle is a Ruger American Predator in 6mm Remington. I was shooting 55 gr. Sierra Blitz Kings.
The bullet left a 24 caliber size entry and no exit. The coyote sounded like mush inside. I chronographed the load at 3720 fps.

Tiny entry, and no exit. This makes two consecutive coyotes taken with this load, and no exit.

Appreciate it guys. My patience was beginning to wear thin on this coyote, but also it’s a joy to camp out down there, which made the stay better. The new solar system is working fine and supplying all my power needs, simple as they are. In addition, I have a small 15” DC powered TV that has a built in DVD player, so I watched a few old hunting movies as well as some movies of my children when they were growing up. The stay at the shack is actually pretty relaxing and good quiet time.

Carver, be sure to post results if you try the 55’s in your Creedmore. I will be anxious to hear if your results are similar to mine.

06, sounds like you are really suffering in that cabin, having use DC power and such. Hang in there, better times are coming LOL. Congrats on a fine looking setup and coyote.

Acronin recommended those 55 gr Sierra Blitzkings a couple years ago.
As long as you stay off of bone, there is no hide damage. Bang/flops are the norm.
I'm running them at 3,500 from a .243. Put that same pill on bone and you'll get tennis ball size entries. I've killed about two dozen coyotes since switching to this slug. Super consistent
performance. All of mine die between 40 and 250 yards.

It is a fantastic bullet if you are looking for frangible. Line up half gallon milk cartons filled with water...it won't touch the second carton in line. Love this Sierra 55!

Thank You. It has been a work in progress over the last 10 years. I have experimented with a variety of things to get to where I am now, and pretty much have it down pat now.

About the light setup, this year I am using two IR spotlights. Both lights have 198 LED's each. One light is a 940nm which is pure stealth - no visible glow at all. The other is an 850nm light. Previously I have used a weapon-mounted 850nm IR, but always use the 940 spotlight to see what's on the bait without giving a red glow.

This is the 940 light.

I have the 940nm light mounted on a tall 4x4 post that is roughly 30 yards from the bait site and about 40 yards from the cabin.

Here you can see the post in the lower right and a dead coyote in the field at the border of the bait area, also a couple
of other coyotes taken at this site.

A small 12 volt battery powers the light when I need it. I don't power the lights all night, just only when I need illumination.
The little box in the upper left corner is where I placed the remote switch.

This is the 850nm light that is mounted on a gate post in the cabin yard, about 45 yards from the bait site.
If you look closely you can see the roof top of the 940 light just below center on the right edge. Both lights
look essentially the same, but operate on different light spectrums. The 850 lights the area up well.

Both lights are powered by 12 volt DC batteries, and both are operated remotely via this device - a 12 volt DC on / off switch,
available on Ebay and Amazon. I am using two different models, both work the same.

Typically I use the 940nm light when the alarm sounds indicating that something is on the bait. I remotely turn the light on,
which has no glow, to see what's there. I can easily shoot with just the 940 light as long as the coyote is within the
illumination range. The view through the scope appears a little bit blurred with this light, but not enough to really matter.
For better brightness and clarity, I then deploy the 850nm light. This one does have a red glow, so I shot quickly after
turning it on, trying to not give the coyote time to turn and look at it, afraid he might spook and run. Sometimes I use
an 850nm illuminator mounted on the rifle, but this year I am experimenting with these two spotlights in conjunction
with the ATN 4k Pro scope. Last year I used thermal totally and didn't use these lights.

As to the little cabin shack, it has been a lot of enjoyment and worth every penny and effort. I have taken probably
close to 40 coyotes from that place over the years. It too has been a work in progress. This summer I added a
solar system to power DC lights and a small TV.

Hope this illustrates how I use the lights and cabin. If you have any other questions, I will be glad to help any way I can.

Man I need to chat with you about off the grid living!!

You done a great job and put some serious thought into your bait site!
