Has anyone had any experience using RL 17 to load 3006 or 270 ?
Picked up some powder the other day and picked up RL 17 by mistake. Not my go to but can't return it.

I've gotten good velocity and accuracy using it with 130's in the .270 Win.

I shoot the 110g Sierra, 110g Hornady HP, and 110g TTSX at 3300 with #17 and 215 primer, very accurate and all these bullets have the same point of impact.

snazzy looking rifle right there. RL 17 I played with in 243 AI, I found it to be peaky, temp sensensative and produced a crappy groups at long range but shot great at 200 yards.

since you're talking 270 win, dude ummm 4831 SC!!!!!! 4831 and the 270 is like putting apples in your pie!! 4831SC is one of my favorite powders, pretty darn good stuff. works great in 243 Ai, 6.5-284 etc.

Steve garrett: best I ever could do with Howa 1500 22" barrel with h4831sc max load was 2900fps 130 nosler ballistic tip great accuracy but that's way too slow imo.

Rl17 and 110 accubond gave me 3400fps in same rifle.

Rl26 gives me 3008fps with 150 sst so that's what I shoot now.

Accuracy is great with 4831sc but many other powders gave good accuracy and lots more speed

Burned many pounds of H4831 in the .270. It's a great powder for the application. When I first started hand loading and had no scale or no powder measure I'd just fill a .270 case up to the top with it and crunch a Hornady 110 down and go splatter jack rabbits. Honestly, right now, I can't remember if I tried the SC version in it or not. I have some, so I might have, but if I did, it didn't leave a lasting memory, lol!

RL17 was good for a decent bump in velocity with no loss of accuracy when I tried it though. Never shot groups at long range or played with it in varying conditions enough to know how it acted, just used it for some deer ammo.

I have used Win 760, IMR 4064 for the 270, its a 7400 Rem I don't shoot much.
My reason for asking was that I stopped into a store in Woodsville NH and grabbed an armload of powder, 3031, 4064, H322, Unique, and RL7. I guess the new Alliant label confused me in the rush because when I got home 3 hours later I found I had RL17 and not 7 so I was looking for applications.

with a 130 grainer you should be seeing 3200fps, or at least 3150. a 110 from a 270 win on a jackrabbit, that aught to be interesting.

since we are talking alliant powder, the only one of them I really like is RL15, I like it for 22-250

RL17 is similar in burn rate to H4350 and will work for the 06. It & RL16 worked extremely well for a 6.5 Creedmoor I had.

For a 270 H4831 is what I use for 130-140 grains, RL26 for 150 & 160 grain bullets.

For what it's worth, I just did a lot of testing with the 87 V-MAX with Reloder 17 in my 243win this summer and I already had a load with 95CT bullets worked up using H4831sc. Both shoot to 100 yards with bullet holes touching but when I chrono'd these loads, RL17... while it had a slight speed advantage, was nowhere near as consistent. The speeds I wrote down for RL17 in other words were a much greater spread than H4831sc with the 95 combined technology bullets. I haven't tested them both at distance yet, but I'm expecting the 95's (H4831sc) to hold together better. I was also testing Reloder 19 with the 87's, and H4831sc, but RL17 came together the best for me. Haven't done any temp consistency testing yet either. For small varminting work, I'll probably just burn the couple of jars I have now of RL17 with these 87's, but I may revisit the other powders again, or possibly IMR or H43450 also yet before declaring my 87 V-MAX load "Final".
