I've always dyed mine in oak saw dust. I could get it by the bucket full at the local mill. I had a half of a 55 gal drum on blocks with a gas burner under it. I first cook them in lye to clean them , rinse and re-cook them with a bunch of oak sawdust in the barrel. Hang them on the barbwire fence to dry and dip in hot melted wax with a nail between the jaws. I did this in the spring after beaver season was over and boxed them in plastic flip top boxes and put them away until fall.
