So my son and I are finally attempting to tan some of the hides from the billions of sheep we eat year in and year out. We are using the battery acid/salt tan method. We are using a fleshing knife successfully. Our challenge is that lots of little hairs (the sheep are the haired, not wooley, type) find their way to the flesh side. They can be manually removed individually. To get rid of them all would take forever. I've watched numerous videos showing fleshing, and not one of them shows this problem. The hides were frozen. We are attempting one hide at a time, and thaw it by placing it in cool water for several minutes.
Can anyone please advise me on how to prevent the hair from getting there in the first place, or as to how to remove the the unwanted hair?
