New Walnut Stock for Ruger American Rimfire .17HMR

I wanted to test my new stock duplicator machine, so I selected my Ruger American Rimfire .17HMR which had a crappy plastic stock. I started with and old stock from a Win 670, I think. I had for years, it had been busted in the receiver area and cut for a child. I add to the length, filled the broken area with Bondo and bedded the .17HMR action and barrel to the stock. This provided the master. I selected a 10 year old piece of walnut. Set them in the duplicator and started cutting.

I'm getting old, so I would work in two hour sessions.

After about five sessions it was cut and time to start sanding.

These are pictures after the first sanding with 150 grit sand paper, next will be to cut off the ends and continue with 220 grit, 322 grit, 400 grit, follow by 600 and 800 grit sanding.

I look forward to seeing the finished article.

Here is my new stock after staining and sealing, first coat. Six to eight more coats of oil and sanding to go. It smooth as butter now. I'm off to my gunsmith to square up the butt on his disk sander and look for a butt pad.

Beautiful stock!! Wish I had the talent for doing such things. You did a fine job. Looking forward to seeing the finished stock.

I admire your work. Very nice indeed. If I had to say anything negative and mean it in a good way, but that beautiful piece of walnut is screaming for some checkering.

Now, Bill, you know that checkering is to a beautiful piece of wood what BBQ sauce is to a good piece of beef.

BBQ sauce is made to cover up a poor piece of meat IMO.
But to each his own.

I've checkered some of my stocks in the past and have a number of checkering sets, but eyes are not what they were. Then checkering is a winter project.

Stock with RMR action mounted and five coats of oil, 3 or 4 to go. Butt plate is ground and installed.

Remaining things to do: imbed brass pillar for front screw, mill larger beveled in front of magazine and mill deeper cut out for front button head screw. Re-sand stock with 1000 grit sand paper before remaining coats of oil. Brass pillars were imbedded for the trigger guard screw.

My new walnut stock is 99.9% finished. Maybe a couple more rubbings in the future, but for now it is done. Since the last time, ten or more coats of BLO, turpentine and beeswax were rubbed into the stock with sanding with 1000 grit paper in between.
