NRA and CRPA Oppose California’s Request to Immediately Halt “Large-Capacity” Magazine Ruling

On Tuesday, April 2, NRA and CRPA attorneys filed an opposition to California’s request seeking an immediate stay of enforcement of Friday’s decision in the case of Duncan v. Becerra, which found California’s restrictions against so-called “large-capacity” magazines unconstitutional and unenforceable. The decision by the United States District Court for the Southern District of California is a tremendous victory for gun owners in California, striking down California’s restrictions against the manufacture, importation, sale, transfer, receipt, and possession of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, most of which have been in place for nearly two-decades.

McConnell: Due to Endless Democratic Obstruction, It's Time to Fast-Track Trump Nominees

If you've been following the judicial confirmation wars of recent years, you're already aware that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has repeatedly taken off the gloves, forcing Democrats to live by the hardball partisan rules they've established over the course of numerous ends-driven power grabs. He detonated Harry Reid's nuclear option after the minority party launched an unprecedented filibuster against Justice Gorsuch's nomination, and has subsequently trimmed and stymied other delay tactics, as Democrats have adjusted their approach to across-the-board resistance. With some Democrats already fuming over the current consequences of the status quo they helped establish (President Trump and Leader McConnell have teamed up to confirm judges at a record pace), additional changes may be on the way.

Pittsburgh approves new gun control legislation

The Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday approved new gun control legislation that will place restrictions on the use of military-style assault weapons, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. The legislation would ban the use assault weapons like the AR-15 rifle, which authorities say was used in the Oct. 27 massacre at Tree of Life Synagogue that killed 11 and wounded several others. It would also ban the use armor-piercing ammunition and high-capacity magazines, as well as allow the temporary seizure of guns from people who are determined to be dangerous to themselves or others, the Post-Gazette reported. The paper noted that the legislation is expected to face court challenges from pro-gun advocates who say they'll sue to block the laws from taking effect, citing Pennsylvania state law that forbids municipalities from regulating guns.

MAIL TRIBUNE
Oregon Democrats pursue gun control measures

As part of an ambitious Democratic agenda, Oregon lawmakers are considering a range of gun control measures, including a provision that would penalize gun owners who fail to safely store their weapons at home. Advocates from both sides of the aisle flooded the Capitol on Tuesday to weigh in on an omnibus gun control package, which, among other things, would tighten gun storage requirements and outlaw untraceable firearms. The proposal would also tighten regulations around 3-D-printed guns and other untraceable firearms, requiring that those who build these weapons to pass a background check. It would also allow retailers to set a minimum purchasing age of firearms and other accessories to 18, 19, 20 or 21. Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and other major retailers have raised the minimum purchasing age to 21 and have been slapped with age discrimination lawsuits in response.

The folly of 'Red Flag' gun laws icon-external-link.png

Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams in Colorado made news Monday over his willingness to go to jail over his refusal to enforce what will soon be the state’s new “Red Flag” law. Given the news media plays these laws, also known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders, as being so sensible, Sheriff Reams looks like a kooky right-winger. After all, who could be against taking away guns from people who are a danger to themselves or others? But the laws are more complicated than usually discussed in the press. Depending upon the state, anyone from a family member, intimate partner, ex, house or apartment mates, or police can file a complaint. Under Colorado’s proposed law, anyone can make a phone call to the police. They don’t even have to be living in the state. There is no hearing. All the judge has before them is the statement of concern.

All the other industry sectors that were involved have already benefitted from this process, when their oversight for export was moved from the U.S. Department of State to the import-export experts at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Brain Science Shows How Hunters Win or Lose at Survival

Why is someone who has everything he needs to survive being lost in the woods—including skills and supplies—found dead while someone else—with no gear or training—is found alive? Sure, some of it is chance, but survivors, no matter their nationality, religion or economic strata, share similar character traits and patterns of decision-making that increase their chances of making it out alive. If you’ve read Laurence Gonzales’ “Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies and Why” then you already know that you need to practice this way of living long before you get off course in a blinding snow storm, your business fails or you’re diagnosed with cancer. If you’ve followed up that book with “Surviving Survival: The Art and Science of Resilience” then you know even more about how the brain processes survival and how you can use hunting, for example, to help heal post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Snapshot Wisconsin" Uses Citizen Science to Aid Wildlife

What do you do if you have more than 6,000 blocks of habitat to survey for wildlife management, but you don’t have anywhere near the number of biologists or field technicians needed to accomplish the task? Answer: If you are a research scientist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), you come up with a wild idea. You ask the public if it would be willing to help. You ask if state residents would set up and monitor thousands of trail cameras in areas of suitable habitat across the state. And you’d call it Snapshot Wisconsin.

Get the Hect Outta Here: Police Chief Suspended After Students Complain About Pro-Gun "Likes"

Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges are two liberal arts institutions for women in the western part of Massachusetts. Both share a campus police department that until recently was overseen by Chief Daniel Hect, who took command February 18 of this year. Less than two months later, however, Hect finds himself on administrative leave after a wave of discontent following students’ scrutiny of his social media accounts. The main complaints, at least according to the students themselves, center on Chief Hect having “liked” tweets that in some cases were issued by the National Rifle Association and in others were supportive of the president of the United States.

With assistance from the NRA, Pittsburgh residents filed a lawsuit today challenging the city’s ban on publicly carrying loaded magazines that accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
