Are Sage Rats out in the Burns Oregeon area yet?

I talked to one of the guide services down there today and was told that they had over sixty shooters going at it.

So something must be up.

What you guys refer to as "sage rats" are Belding's ground squirrel correct ?

We call ours "gophers" AKA Richardson's ground squirrels.
They have been out for a month and a half well before the snow melted. Great fun to see the "Red Mist" on clean white snow.

There big cousins The "prairie dog" don't hibernate and can be shot all year long.
You get a calm sunny day in February and there all over ...

That is correct, the sage rats in the Burns/Crane area are technically Belding's ground squirrels.

I grew up in NW MT, the Columbian Ground squirrel looks and is nearly the size of tree squirrels. These live at about 2000' elevation and above. Here on the East side of the divide, at least 4 different species exit across the state, with an occasional 5 Striped variety. Prairie poodles are scattered across this area, with colonies of some fun shooting. I try to do more of a 'keep em under control' shooting on some ranches where not many folks are welcome.
