New Mexico bill to outlaw coyote contests

Years ago the New Mexico Cattle Growers Assoc. ran most of the politics in N.M., but not no more. We now have "(different) kinds of people" moving here and they are opposed to everything. With the "new" form of Democrat politician and voter N.M. may soon be like California or worse.

The proposed bill does not exclude contests where a silhouette target of a coyote is used or playing a video game where coyotes are killed. It appears that those activities would also be illegal with the way the proposal is written.

Also, the "Game" Commission is conveniently misspelled in Section G so the proposal may conflict with the state Game Commission.

G. Nothing in this section shall be construed to
prohibit a person from protecting a person or property or the
state gave commission from carrying out the statutory authority
allowed by Chapter 17 NMSA 1978 in a non-coyote-killing contest
setting."

I am more concerned with this language in the bill..."objective of killing coyotes for prizes or entertainment."

It's not going to be a far stretch to think that the anti-hunting crowd will go after coyote hunting in general and use the fact that fun IS entertainment.

I always worry about these types of far reaching, loosely worded proposals. It doesn't take much for them to keep chipping away at something we used to take for granted.

Why is N.M. Democrat, because it is a WELFARE state, Santa Fe is over run with RICH liberals from Calif. and New York. Hippies once inhabited (and still do but they are now known as Millennials ), Taos, Santa Fe, Silver City, Placitas and Albuquerque. Hispanics in this state have been traditional Democrats since forever. I best shut up for now.

In addition to all of it's other problems, the state politicos are wanting to legalize pot. Colorado was a RED state it has been blue for a few years now for most of the same reasons as N.M.

People that don't spend anytime around wildlife don't have the same perspective as those who do. Unfortunately, more and more Americans are spending their time indoors and in large cities. The hills, mountains and deserts of NM are not some wilderness utopia that some liberals think they are. Man has permanently altered the landscape and habitat of the entire state of NM and as a result man needs to help maintain balance. Letting coyotes overpopulate and die from mange is much worse than them getting killed in coyote competitions. People disconnected from wildlife don't see this. Coyotes, wolves, bears and mountain lions are not the type of animals Disney and others portray them to be. Predators are not "bad" animals, they just do what predators do. Coyotes are not "bad" animals either but they will still do what coyotes do. Man is the top predator in NM. Is it less ethical for a man to shoot a coyote than it is for a wolf to kill a coyote? As hunters we don't think it is any less ethical and unfortunately we will never convince many of the crazy liberals otherwise. Some of them are the same crazy liberals that think late term abortion is ok. One thing that I have learned is that you can't reason or argue with "crazy" or "ignorant" people.
I actually feel like I have done some coyotes a favor by shooting them. Ones that have severe mange or an old female that I killed last year that had almost no teeth left and cataracts. A "natural death" in the wild is brutal. Those of us that spend time outside the city know and understand this because we have seen how brutal nature is.
Banning coyote competitions will not have any significant impact of how many coyotes are killed by humans in NM but it will make the certain politicians feel good about themselves.

Large population centers covering just a fraction of the landscape have overwhelmed the rest of the voters in NM. As stated above, it's the same demographic issue that has changed Colorado and has happened on a national scale. Folks disconnected from the reality of nature are now dictating how that nature should be managed instead of trained biologists and wildlife conservationists. I won't get into contests, but I'll just we leave at this - let the professionals do their jobs and keep wildlife management out of politics.

The bill states "As used in this section, "coyote-killing contest" means an organized or sponsored competition with the objective of killing coyotes for prizes or entertainment."

So what if the contest flyers stated "the objective of this contest is NOT to kill coyotes for prizes or entertainment, it is to reduce problem coyote populations" or "it is to promote comraderie among predator hunters"? ..and those that meet those objectives are eligible to win prizes? The bill is very poorly worded andI think you'd win that in court.

I emailed the governor and asked why she would protect coyotes but kill a human baby... New Mexico government has been corrupt since the king of Spain sent Onate to pillage the pueblos. In the mid to late 1800's the Santa Fe Ring ran all of the territory and crooked politics have ruled ever since. We have a beautiful state ran by outside interest. We have a large portion of the population on the government dole (democrat/socialist) and we all know you can't wean them off... I've thought about leaving but I can't, Dad didn't raise any quitters!

Coyote killing contest aren't the only thing under attack in NM. The new democrats in the legislature and regulatory offices are running wild and our Pelosi want-a-be governor is all for it. The wild eyed liberals are the new rulers of the roost and that's the way it's going to be. The reasons for them being in charge are already posted and it's the truth.
