Pittsburgh Mayor Declares Intent to Ban Guns in Violation of State Law

Yesterday, we reported that it was likely that sweeping gun control measures would be proposed in Pittsburgh. Today, Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto held a press conference to propose a trio of anti-gun city ordinances that, if enacted, would constitute a direct violation of Pennsylvania’s state firearms preemption law and Pennsylvania Supreme Court precedent. At the event, Peduto was joined by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf, who benefitted from $500,000 in spending from Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety during his 2018 re-election bid, and City Council members Corey O’Connor and Erika Strassburger.

Getting Priorities Straight: House Democrats and the Public

Anti-gun organizations and their sycophants would have you believe that the 2018 midterm elections were a referendum on gun rights. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi “vows to fight” for “bipartisan, common sense” gun control and announced gun control “will be a priority” even before she had secured the Speaker’s gavel. The eagerness to curtail Constitutional rights isn’t limited to Nancy Pelosi; Representative Mike Thompson, head of the Democrats’ “gun violence prevention task force” and incoming Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Representative Jerry Nadler are both on record confirming they’ll push gun control early next year.

Twist: American Criticizes UK Shooting Traditions?

Americans are often encouraged by anti-gun politicians to embrace United Kingdom-style gun control. This would entail restrictive gun owner licensing, a near total ban on all handguns (handguns are permitted but heavily restricted in Northern Ireland), a ban on commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles, and a near prohibition on the use of firearms and even non-lethal alternatives for self-defense. Moreover, U.S. gun controllers are egged on in their efforts by the UK press.

Turning a Right into a Privilege: HR 1112 Gives Feds Unfettered Power to Block Gun Sales

H.R. 8, which would criminalize the private transfer of firearms, has received significant attention from the gun rights community. However, H.R. 1112, which purportedly targets the inappropriately-named “Charleston loophole,” is just as insidious an attack on gun owners. All Federal Firearms Licensees (gun dealers) are required to conduct a background check on prospective purchasers to determine if transferring the firearm would violate state or federal law. Under current law, if an FFL initiates a background check, but does not receive a determination from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System within three business days, the FFL may proceed with the firearms transfer. After the three-day window, FBI continues to research the matter that gave rise to an individual’s delay for 90 days after the check was initiated. If it is later determined that the person is prohibited from possessing firearms, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is notified and tasked with retrieving the firearm.

Most Americans incorrectly think gun-murder rates have gotten worse, not better

On the first anniversary of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., NPR, “PBS NewsHour” and Marist released a poll exploring views of various approaches to gun ownership in the United States. At the end of that poll, though, was an interesting question. The pollsters asked respondents a question about a matter of fact: Did they think that the rate of gun murders in the United States was higher or lower than it had been 25 years ago? This history was probably not immediately at hand for respondents. So how did the poll respondents view gun violence now as opposed to then? Most believed that the rate of gun murders now is higher than it was at that point. To be explicit: This is wrong. Data from the FBI breaks out reported murders by type of weapon, showing a drop in the raw count of firearm murders since a peak in 1993. (Both the Marist poll and the FBI data are predicated on “murder” as a metric, a term The Washington Post generally reserves for homicides involving a criminal conviction.)

Bloomberg’s Everytown: Criminalizing Private Transfers is About Creating “Culture of Compliance”

The Truth about Gun Sales and H.R. 8

As Congress considers H.R. 8, let’s consider some of the arguments made in support of so-called “universal” background checks. Anti-gun organizations regularly claim that criminals acquire firearms online. Everytown and its predecessor, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, have published a number of “reports” that claim to have found evidence of prohibited people attempting to buy firearms through websites that “could potentially” transfer tens of thousands of guns. This last statement, of course, chooses hyperbole over reality.

What to Make of Crime in England?

Sometimes it’s hard to understand what things are really like “across the pond.” Anti-gun extremists in America reflexively point to England whenever the discussion about adding restrictions, and especially banning firearms, arises here in the United States. England, after all, had banned virtually all semi-automatic and pump-action rifles and shotguns in the 1980s, then imposed a near total ban on handguns in the 90s. Those British subjects who wish to own the few types of rifles and shotguns the government has deemed allowable for civilian possession must navigate a Byzantine system of licensing and certification.

Getting out of step. I should know—I spent 25 years instilling those values into my Marines. On this, though, I can’t salute. These military officers claim the moral high ground in the gun debate. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker Wants Everyone to Be Vegan

by Cody McLaughlin - Saturday, February 16, 2019

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker Wants Everyone to Be Vegan
More

In a recent interview with Vegnews, a pro-vegan anti-hunting magazine, New Jersey’s junior senator and newest 2020 presidential candidate, Cory Booker, (D-N.J.) flaunted his anti-hunting and animal rights extremist credentials in a lengthy talk about his plans for the country.

Sen. Cory Booker Declares the World Has a Meat Problem

When asked what he would like to accomplish legislatively for animals and veganism, he launched into a tirade about the “negative impacts” that our current food system has on animals. “It’s great to see that consciousness and how people are demanding a change,” he said. He went on to list the bills he currently backs for supporting deep-pocketed corporate vegan interests, labeling them as wins for animals, “public safety” and “American values.”

While claiming to be “pro-choice” in every sense, Senator Booker at the same time declared that “the planet simply can’t sustain’ meat consumption” and the “Standard American Diet” of meat and sides. He further suggested that he would “fight the existing model” by building a new model, presumably without meat, to make current nutrition standards—and years of evolution and traditional meat consumption—“obsolete.”

The End Goal: A Cost-Focused “Shadow Ban” of Meat Consumption

Rather than battling the “political third rail” of America’s politics by uttering a charged, controversial statement where Booker tries to force America to become vegan overnight via legislation, he chooses here to please his extremist backers by instead forcing the cost of meat so high that the average American can no longer afford to eat a balanced meal. By forcing animal farming first into solely small businesses, it will drastically drive up the cost of meat production and, by extension, consumption. These sorts of “shadow bans” are par for the course among liberal special interest groups, such as when Connecticut lawmakers introduced a bill recently to impose a 50 percent tax on ammunition to dissuade cash-strapped middle-class Americans from pursuing pastimes like gun ownership, hunting and recreational target shooting.

The Facts About Meat Consumption

While perhaps the most controversial “sect” of meat eaters, sportsmen are also the most prolific when it comes to environmental protection (and even true animal welfare). As a matter of fact, according to data from groups like the NRA to the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, nearly 34 million Americans ages 16 and older head outdoors to hunt and fish every year, and those 34 million Americans are responsible for the majority of fish and wildlife conservation funding in the United States just through their hunting license fees and excise taxes on their equipment—not to mention the countless dollars in charitable giving to habitat restoration projects and hunter-backed wildlife conservation groups through charitable contributions to organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, the Mule Deer Foundation and others.

Animal farming, meanwhile, is a huge industry that employs millions of Americans with family-wage jobs. It also is a major contributor to efforts to preserve green and open space nationwide—including in Booker’s home state of New Jersey.

Also worth noting, while some Democrats actually are running away from the extremist “Green New Deal” proposal being advanced by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in recent weeks—and with proposals such as “economic security for those unwilling to work” who can blame them—Sen. Cory Booker has made this issue front-and-center in his campaign for the White House.
