Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman is in a dilemma over Initiative 1639. What is a problem is that I-1639 petitions – signed by more than 360,000 voters and filed with the Office of Secretary of State for verification – look flawed. Wyman says the law requires a readable copy of the initiative text on the back of petitions. But the I-1639 language was in a tiny, hard-to-read font, which leaves her “concerned” that a precedent is set if she ignores it. The second-term Republican said the petitions also failed to clearly mark initiative language that would be new in state law if I-1639 passes. The standard is for initiatives to underline any new language and to run a line through any wording to be repealed.

Gov Phil Scott’s (VT) approval rating topples after signing gun control bills

Gov. Phil Scott saw a sharp drop in approval in the second quarter of 2018, the latest Morning Consult poll shows, a plummet that political analysts are attributing to his decision earlier this year to tighten the state’s gun laws. Two other recent polls have shown Scott struggling with his own political base, but unlike those polls, Morning Consult conducts regular polling showing changes over time. Scott, who last quarter was one of the most popular governors in the country, is now one of the least. The new poll shows him dropping from the list of top 10 most liked governors and falling to just three spots away from the 10 least popular state executives.

Schumer Goes Full Semi-automatic

Everybody knows you never go full semiautomatic. That is, except Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and his anti-gun comrades. Wailing that “America is going to get a lot less safe,” Schumer claimed that such firearms “are not only scary, they’re outright dangerous in the way they can mimic the look and the capacity of a hardened, fully semiautomatic weapon.” A day later, Michael Bloomberg front-group Moms Demand Action re-posted Schumer’s comments on their twitter feed.
