I got this 223 Savage with a rebate a couple years ago for a nice deal. It has always been a great shooter, didn't like the stock so I did a checkered Walnut Boyds......they do good work. I recently had it cut and crowned at 20 inches with the intention of getting a youth stock from Savage for my son. I put the action back in the stock, torqued it to 30 in/lbs and took it to the range to test it. Still likes 23.5 of H322 with a 50 grain Vmax. A 20 inch bolt rifle is a pretty nice balance.

I've also got a little Axis 223 that one of my boys has been eyeballing for a few years now. getting the barrel cut down to make it a bit more manageable for him would likely be the best way to go. I have looked through Boyd's in the past for different options for the rifle as I didn't care much for the factory stock myself and was wanting to get something that he could shoulder comfortably. only thing i hadn't thought of was trimming down the business end. I hope that it's not too forward of me to ask but what did you have to give to get the barrel trimmed and a crown cut back in?

50 bucks. I used to think cut and crowns were expensive. My buddy took his 700SPS to a local gunsmith and we were both shocked at 50 bucks. Guy does great work.

I paid $35 for a savage cut and crown. But that was just a barrel, no action or anything on it. Then today learned to cut and crown in under an hour of instruction and within my first hour and a half on a lathe popped one out. Very simple and easy with the correct tools. Half hour job.
