Remington 700 vs Savage Model 10

Well, this should be interesting. I looked at two rifles yesterday at a local shop. The Remington is a 700 SPS Varmint, the Savage a Model 10. Both in 308, both had 24/26 inch barrels, (not really sure about barrel length), and of course, both in plastic stocks. The Remington had a Nikon Buckmaster scope so it was priced a little higher but if you deducted the value of the scope, they were about the same price. What's your thoughts? Keep it civil please! Its just for fun.

Geeze Bill. I was a M700 fan long before I was a Savage anything fan. That started changing somewhat when Gun Test magazine started running comparisons of different rifles and whenever there was a Savage in the mix (bolt action centerfires) the Savage would always come out the winner. When I got my Savage 112 in .223 about 15 years ago that really started getting the ball rolling as far as liking Savages- a lot.

I have three Remington 700 rifles and three Savage (112 and two 12's) rifles and love then all. The Remington is a better looking rifle as far as I and most people are concerned, but as a shooter right out of the box? Most likely the Savage is going to win that. Been my experience anyway. Tough choice any way you look at it.

I have 3 700's and a half dozen Savages.

Rem. Nice clean action no knobs, levers, or nuts to detract from it. Many after market parts.

Sav. Not that pleasing to look at but they shoot well. After market parts are getting near the availability of the 700's. It is a tinkerers dream as you can go from 223 to WSM's and any cartridge in between and back again with just hand tools at home.

If you want to have a pleasing to look at and good shooter get a Rem, want to putz with a rifle that can shoot well get a Sav.

I've never met a Savage rifle that didn't shoot good. My Remington 700 is the most accurate rifle I own. So it's a toss up for me. I like the looks of the 700's better. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

I've been shooting Savage bolt actions since the early 1960's and now hunt with several from .222 to .308. Every Savage I've owned has been a shooter and very reliable. Most of my big game hunting is done with a .260. Love the tang safety . I also have 2 700 SPS's in .17 Fireball (Varmint and regular barrel) that are my primary groundhog/varmint guns. Both are incredibly accurate but the actions are gritty and the 26" varmint model is no fun on a spot and stalk hunt because it's barrel heavy.

I'd compare the features and pick whichever feels better in your hands.

I have 1 Savage model 12 in 6.5 CM and it is an absolute hammer. 1/2" gun confirmed on a 6x5 with 147 hornadys. I wouldn't hesitate buy another. For me, Remington has been hit and miss

Such as? And don't get me wrong, I like the older Remington's too.

Yeah, I'd like to know too. For my varmint rifles accuracy is first and foremost the most important thing.

I'm right there with ya. Generally, Savages shoot pretty darn good but I just can't get past that fugly freakin action and barrel nut so they're a no bueno for me.

Something about a Remy Model 700 that everything just looks right so I'll forever be a Rem M700 fan.

For me I like both, had gooduns and baduns in both.I cant deny I do like being able to swap barrels and bolt knobs out myself with the savage rifles.

Yup! I took a Model 12 Savage that I had in .221 Fireball and made it into a .243 AI. I love those barrel nuts. Makes swapping tubes a 15 minute job and that's includes headspacing.

I know you're right Russ, but owning a Savage is kinda like having a moped or dating a fat girl, they're a lot of fun to ride, but you just don't want anyone seeing you do it.

But see- when you get my age you dont worry about how you present yourself quite as much. I ride a scooter sometimes (albeit a big one-a Suzuki 650 Burgman) and have dated girls in the past that were, shall we say, well upholstered, and enjoyed them both. But nowadays I only get to ride my scooter. That's fine. I just need a gas station- not a perscritpion for Viagra.

I like save because A- accurate and B- simple to upgrade at home. Even barrel swaps. Remington made a great action but now puts out such trash. There’s a reason they bankrupted. Lotta recalls on those 500 million sold.

Custom gunsmiths will tell you that the newer 700 CNC actions need less trueing than earlier ones did for accuracy purposes. Granted, Rem did have a period of building rifles with less than stellar barrel maybe 10 years ago, but current rifles are pretty solid. They went bankrupt because they quit making good models that people will regularly buy. Read terrible management.

As for recalls on the trigger because they are faulty and kill people....... There is more fiction than truth to that matter in a lot of ways. A common story told that gets a lot of press space is the lady who shot her son thru a horse trailer. Why was she pointing the rifle at a horse trailer while unloading it? Her young son had ran behind the trailer and fate took over.

I'm not saying I don't have muchos sympathy for her and her family because I do. I'm simply saying guns don't kill people by themselves. Sometimes people do stupid things with guns in their hands.

I was at Karl Kampfeld's (Kampfeld Custom) last year getting some Rem bolts fluted and asked him if he thought the older Rem 700 actions were truer than the newer ones, he said the same thing, the newer ones are actually better than the older ones.
