45-70

I just bought a Henry H010CC 45-70. I shot it some with Federal 300gr HP
Its pretty accurate for out of the box. Want to start reloading and was wondering whats a good powder to start with.

I use H4198 with my cast bullets.

IMR 4198 300GR Hornady HP. shoots great from my marlin 1895.

H-322, Rl-7 3031 all work, as do others, but H-322 is hard to beat for most any load in the 45/70.

We reload the Speer 405 grn soft points over IMR3031 in factory Marlin at 1400 fps and a Wild West Customs 45-70 at 1900 fps.

Another vote for IMR 3031, H-322 and H4198.

Imr 4198 in my big loop 45-70 and same in my small loop 45-70. Can get my shots touching at 100yds from the big loop remlin using 49gr of the above powder using Hornadys 300 Jhp bullet.

RL7 worked good for me with 350 grain Hornady

Thanks for the help. I have IMR 4198 and IMR 3031 so I will give those a shot. Do you prefer cast or jacketed bullets and what weight bullets work best. I know each gun will have its preference just seeing what you like.
