Im looking at getting a Manfrotto ball head for my AR15 and Armasight Nemesis I understand Magpul makes a m-lok device now that fits the RC2/Q2 interface. I currently own a Bogpod tripod and was wondering if any one has mounted a Manfrotto ball head on a Bog pod tripod. I am looking for the cheapest way possible out of this. Any help is appreciated!

How did you attach the head to the tripod? just wondering i know the manfrotto head accepts a 3/8x16 thread did you simply buy a bolt and use existing hole on tripod to fix it on top?

theres a smaller metric thread recessed up inside of the 3/8-16 thread. it is 8mm I believe. I used a socket head bolt to affix the grip head

I've been using the Manfrotto 468mg head with q6 top lock for a few years it is a solid head. Attachment method is a picatinny bipod adapter that has been drilled and tapped with the q6 plate attached.

The Manfrotto is a great setup for the money. If you are looking for the best tripod setup as far as stability and mounting options, really right stuff is he way to go. They have the SOAR line which uses the bh55 series heads and they have the best mounting options, keymod, mlok, picatinny, etc. They are pricey but are a step above the rest.

You definitely need a swiveling tripod that will support the weight and recoil of a rifle. As mentioned, standard tripods use a 1/4"- 20 threaded adaptor screw. If money is tight, you can tap ($6-8 bucks at the hardware store) a heavy duty steel scope ring, riser, etc (weaver or picatinny) and attach it to the tripod.

I'm bored so here are some photos of the aforementioned idea which should help for illustration purposes and this took me less than 10 minutes to do (had everything:

Edit: Take your time (don't drink :)) and center before drilling/tapping for aesthetic reasons.

RRS are nice but retarded expensive. I've handled a few and they are very nice but I don't feel they are $1k nice.

I have manfrotto, bogpod and various others. generally I run a hog saddle on my tripod but I also use the Mcree rail grabber in my pic above. I really prefer a free panning system on a tripod for ease of shooting movers and that happens a lot. for straight static shots the manny grip and tripod are great.

I've been using that exact setup for over a year now. I use the Larue Tactical QD mount. Works awesome and I like it a lot. Holds AR hands free at any angle until you are ready to shoot. The trigger pistol grip on the Manfrooto makes running shots fast and stable. You can buy a thread reducer to fit the tripod screw on ebay or at a good camera shop.

this guy demos it

I leave my Larue mount locked into Manfro though. Then drop my AR rail into mount when ready to use just as fast that way instead of leaving mount attached to rail all the time.

Thanks guys! Im hoping the bog pod will work out because Im tight on money after buying new nightvision scope right now im looking at the manfrotto 054 magnesium ball head and the magpul mlok tripod adapter and try to affix that to the bogpod like what spartan1 did.

Oh. Nice. I wasn't aware of or that mount wasn't available when I got the larue. The only issue I see with that magpul is that it has to stay attached to your AR. That is a clunky piece when not using the Manfro on tripod. Atleast with the larue it's QD. I can keep it on gun like the Magpul or run it like I do and keep it on my tripod and drop gun rail into it fast when I need it. I don't always use my pod on my stands so I don't want that mount attached all the time or the extra weight if I roll into a field and yotes already out there and I free hand shoot. Just saying and giving you my experiences with it

so after deciding I would try a tripod, I now need suggestions for a full setup. From what I see a manfrooto seems to be a good option. So which model and head should I look at? Any other suggestions are certainly welcome. My intent is to use this to scan with since my only thermal is on my gun at this time. Hopefully this is doable.

A high quality setup like you are describing will cost you $700 to $1200 or more. My suggestion is to take this money and apply it toward the purchase of a hand scanning unit. Constantly swinging your rifle around will wear you out and get you busted not to mention the safety implications if other hunters are around.

If you are determined to go this route you might look at the Reaper. I have this rig and it works for me stalking hogs.

A buddy has a ball head setup and it's nice also. I think his rig was around $1500 with a carbon fiber tripod.

Night Googles just posted to day carbon fiber tripods & gun mount 270.00 or 290.00 depending on the mount. Better check it out.
