cycling subsonics without a suppressor is usually more difficult than with a can on the end of the barrel
 
Most of the subsonic ammo has a heavier bullet so they will function in semi autos and the can will only help them function better as they will have more pressure to cycle.
 
Most standard/subsonic (these terms are interchangeable) loads are around 1025-1090fps and should cycle a semi-auto. The stuff for pest control like Winchester's is only 750fps and while awesome and literally whisper quiety, it wouldn't cycle my Ruger 10/22 or Ruger 22/45 Tactical pistol and turned them into single shots. CCI Standard Velocity is very good ammo and can be found online much cheaper.
 
My 7.5" AR-22 with a Dead Air Mask functions 100% with Winchester 42gr hp subs. My bolt action runs flawless with anything!
