Just as the heading says, this question is for those who turn calls...or pieces of their calls...on a lathe...from "solid" tips of cow or bison horn.

When turning distress calls...Do you guys have a specific starting length, and diameter, that you need them to be?

Also, how often do you find (what I call) "air voids", in seemingly solid horn tips?

{I have always been curious about the length and diameter question.}

Will, I like them to be about 3" or longer to start. 1" to 1 1/2" dia. is good if you can get it. I have a hard time finding them now days that don't have voids in them. Half or more of the one I turn seem to hit the trash can due to voids in them.

Great Looking Young Man Will!!!!!!!!!!!

It is hard to find Good Horn now days, I do have a very good stash hidden out, but most of my Turned Horn Calls are sold before I turn them (special orders). The ones that are not perfect go to young Kids that are trying to learn to call. I always have a few Calls in my Truck to give to the Kids, any kid that comes with their Dad or Grand Dad to pick up Calls always leaves with a Call or two.
