I was digging through my stuff and found this old 12 coyote bounty check from the Helena MT area. Thought you all might find it interesting.........

P.S. This was 5yrs before Montana became a state!

How much is that in bitcoin? Either way I'd take that much now if the mailed it to me. It would cover .5 of each shot.

Here is an interesting article.......

Montana's first bounty law, passed in 1883, paid $1 for every pelt. Within the first year, 5,450 wolf hides were collected.

Soon, a cottage industry of "wolfers" cropped up. Between 1870 and 1877, they killed more than 55,000 wolves a year, according to a 1986 article in Montana Magazine by Dave Walter, reference librarian at the Montana Historical Society.

Bounties fluctuated over the years, reaching a high of $15 in 1911.

Very cool piece of our history. I grew up in Libby, the timber and mining camps prior to the date on that check had hunters working steadily to feed the growing early towns. By 1910 ish, any wolves in the area were long gone and the Whitetail population was at starvation level. Not long after, hunting regulation got it's legs. Growing up, we seldom saw coyotes in the woods. Bears...lots of bears

It would be interesting to compare yearly wages back then to yearly wages nowadays. Can someone smarter than me give us an idea?

What cost $1 in 1884 would cost $27.09 in 2016.

either way, still really cool and I just admire the quality of their hand writing..
The average high school grad today couldn't write that well now.
