Northern Nevada ground squirrel trip

I just got a report from some friends that made a 700 mile drive to the upper part of Nevada. One of them have been there before the other is a NEWBY on ground squirrels. The squirrels are so thick they may run out of ammo before it's time to come home. The rancher told them he has 10,000 HMR's so don't worry Just kill them all, Ha Ha. I'll add more later'

How did the trip go?

I spoke with a biologist at the Hendrson, NV office of NDOW last week, and he told me that ground squirrels are not on the unrestricted species list. I know there are squirrels shot all over Nevada, so I'm confused about their status. I wonder if a license is need to shoot them.
