22 NOSLER VS. 22X.8 VS. 556

some 22 Nosler load data. I made the decision to put together an AR in 22 nosler. Ordered and recieved a WOA 24" stainless upper. installed on anderson lower with Giesele trigger.
Load data came from Nosler and Hogdon. If you e-mail them they have a bunch of loads tested already with several different powders. The following data is from 5 shot groups shot at 100 yards and the average velocity is from a magnetospeed sport. groups are measured with digital micrometer measured from center to center of farthest apart shots. all reloads are nosler brass naturally, with wolf SMR primer. and I will add that I tried hornady 55 gr. v max with a couple powders and also 55 gr hornady spire point lead tip. My barrel does not like hornady lead, shooting every group in larger than 1.5" groups.
all groups shot with calm wind and 52 degree temp. with barrel cool down time in between groups.
so, following is in this order, charge, powder, fps and group.
Factory 77 gr. 3074 and .382
55 gr factory 3566 and .483
loads with 55 gr Nosler ballistic tip lead with COAL of 2.260 which is max magazine length and .010 off the lands with this bullet
31.5 cfe223 3265 1.41
32.5 3366 .998
33.5 3383 1.47
29 varget 3240 .958
30 3273 .957
31 3370 1.05
29 IMR 4166 3160 .944
30 3312 .675
31 3402 .328
29.5 reloader 15 3079 .619
30.5 3212 .338
31.5 3356 .443
27.5 H 4895 3145 .710
28.5 3225 .675
29.5 3345 .806
27.5 8208 3118 .824
28.5 3222 .730
29.5 3357 .467
28 benchmark 3273 .729
29 benchmark 3366 .411
One group with sierra SBK's
29.5 8208 3374 .419
Further testing will be done with Reloader 15, 4166, benchmark and 8208 with The nosler and sierra bullets.

as a comparison the following rifles shoot the same Nosler 55 gr ballistic tip at this velocity
26" barrel 220 swift 3932 fps with it's pet load
26" barrel 22-250 3660 fps with it's pet load

Some observations.
I think the WOA barrel is excellent.
I think Greg is right about the saami PSI reasoning at 55000 psi.
The brass is the limiting factor.
The factory 77 gr. is very hot in my rifle with smeared bases, flat primers and expanded primer pockets and a .417 measurement at the web. rendering it pretty much useless for reloading again.
The new brass measures .415 at the web. the reloads I've shot so far measure from .415 to .416 with normal looking primers and the 55 gr. factory measure .416. No smearing of base and tight primer pockets.

I'm surprised you're within .010" of the lands with the 55's. I wonder if he shortened up the lead on his reamer?

Impressive speed with the factory 55's. It doesn't look like you're anywhere close with any of the handloads. I would think 8208 would get you there but it doesn't look like it. FYI I use 30.4 gr 8208 behind a 50 vmax for 3430 fps iirc from the 18" stoner. Accuracy is there all the way to 500 which is as far as I've gone.

Thanks for the report.
