Texas Legislature Working on Bill to Ban Sanctuary Cities, Jail Defiant Sheriffs

Following 16 hours of debate, the Texas House approved a strict ban on ‘sanctuary’ cities in their state, even opening up the possibility that sheriffs and police chiefs be jailed and removed from power if they don’t comply.

The bill would allow state funds to be withheld from local governments should they fail to cooperate and enforce immigration law.

The legislation is similar to that recently struck down on a federal scale by an Obama-appointed judge.

Via the New York Times:

The Republican-controlled Texas House approved early Thursday a strict ban on “sanctuary cities” in the country’s second-largest state, seeking to empower law enforcement to enforce federal immigration law against anyone they detain and threatening to jail police chiefs and sheriffs who refuse to do so.

The vote came just before 3 a.m. and followed 15-plus hours of heated, sometimes tearful debate, much of it from outnumbered Democrats.

The bill would allow Texas to withhold funding from county and local governments for acting as sanctuary cities — even as the Trump administration’s efforts to do so nationally have hit roadblocks. Other Republican-led states have pushed for similar polices, but Texas would be the first in which police chiefs and other officials could face criminal charges and be removed from office for not helping enforce immigration law.

Can you imagine if a simple concept like upholding the law and jailing accomplices to crime were enacted throughout the country?

Such a sanctuary city ban would have benefitted Jamiel Shaw, Jr., gunned down and killed by an illegal immigrant who had been released from a county jail despite an ICE order to hold him following several gun charges.

And it could have helped Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old woman shot and killed by Francisco Sanchez, an illegal immigrant who had been deported five times but found a safe haven in the sanctuary city of San Francisco.

“Sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States willfully violate Federal law in an attempt to shield aliens from removal from the United States,” President Trump declared in his executive order. “These jurisdictions have caused immeasurable harm to the American people and to the very fabric of our Republic.”

While activist judges continue to do ‘immeasurable harm’ to the American people, Texans can at least rest assured that their lawmakers are trying to stop it.

I would hope they put the mayor of these cities in jail too, since they are the ones that are the boss of the police chief's of sanctuary cities.

Basically shouldn't the boss telling the police chief to not comply, also go to jail. Sheriff's are elected, so they are right person, but they should also go after the mayors..

Wouldn't the mayor's then be removed from their jobs since they are now criminals and cannot hold office?

Seems like a good way to clean up the mess.

Victims of the illegals should also be able to sue the city, if they can prove they had previously been released after contact with LEOs refusing to comply... I'm sure some ambulance chasing lawyers could make sum thing stick...

But wouldn't most agree that if the city counsel or Mayor are telling that police chief to not comply they also as that police chief's boss be complicit in the crime, as outlined in the new law for Texas??

Another example is the below link. Read this and you will be surprised at the volume of what we are talking about.

A Center for Immigration Studies report on the data from ICE to the Senate Judiciary Committee added that the committee is not releasing the names of the murder suspects.

"The criminal aliens released by ICE in these years — who had already been convicted of thousands of crimes — are responsible for a significant crime spree in American communities, including 124 new homicides. Inexplicably, ICE is choosing to release some criminal aliens multiple times," said the report written by CIS's respected director of policy studies, Jessica M. Vaughan.

She added that 75 percent were released due to court orders or because their countries wouldn't take them back.

What's more, her report said that in 2014, ICE released 30,558 criminal aliens who had been convicted of 92,347 crimes. Only 3 percent have been deported.

By my estimate that would be 92,347 less victims, assuming that some crime was multiple counts and some crimes have multiple victims. But, never the less, it is 92,000+ crimes that didn't have to happen. It's 30,000+ criminals that didn't have to be in the justice system AGAIN.. Not costing the tax payers for their food, lawyers, and all other costs for them.

I again, think we should be shipping the non-citizens convicted of felonies off to Siberia for their time. Outsource it.
What are they going to do, complain. SO what, they are not citizens and have no right to sit in a USA jail. After they get out, they can have money for a flight to their country of origin.
Think of how many illegals would leave as fast as they could if the thought they were going to have to do jail time in Siberia.

I hope that it passes, but austin, brownsville, dallas, elpaso, and houston areas get to vote. Throw the whole bunch in jail for conspiracy
