The variation can have some bearing on accuracy. Over gassed guns tend to not shoot as well as under gassed because of the early inconsistent opening. YMMV Harmonic variation is induced by less or more gas.
I ran my hunting ar on paper while changing gas port opening when i first put it on. I got almost 2" different point of impact from gas full open to gas full closed. I tried the same thing on an ar-10, same result, I would not change the gas port any significant amount without checking the zero afterwards.
