Ron Paul Suggests A Better Solution Than Trump's Border Wall
by Tyler Durden Jan 30, 2017 9:30 PM

Authored by Ron Paul via The Ron Paul Institute for Peace & Prosperity,

Just one week in office, President Trump is already following through on his pledge to address illegal immigration. His January 25th executive order called for the construction of a wall along the entire length of the US-Mexico border. While he is right to focus on the issue, there are several reasons why his proposed solution will unfortunately not lead us anywhere closer to solving the problem.

First, the wall will not work. Texas already started building a border fence about ten years ago. It divided people from their own property across the border, it deprived people of their land through the use of eminent domain, and in the end the problem of drug and human smuggling was not solved.

Second, the wall will be expensive. The wall is estimated to cost between 12 and 15 billion dollars. You can bet it will be more than that. President Trump has claimed that if the Mexican government doesn’t pay for it, he will impose a 20 percent duty on products imported from Mexico. Who will pay this tax? Ultimately, the American consumer, as the additional costs will be passed on. This will of course hurt the poorest Americans the most.

Third, building a wall ignores the real causes of illegal border crossings into the United States. Though President Trump is right to prioritize the problem of border security, he misses the point on how it can be done effectively and at an actual financial benefit to the country rather than a huge economic drain.
The solution to really addressing the problem of illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and the threat of cross-border terrorism is clear:

remove the welfare magnet that attracts so many to cross the border illegally, stop the 25 year US war in the Middle East, and end the drug war that incentivizes smugglers to cross the border.
The various taxpayer-funded programs that benefit illegal immigrants in the United States, such as direct financial transfers, medical benefits, food assistance, and education, cost an estimated $100 billion dollars per year. That is a significant burden on citizens and legal residents. The promise of free money, free food, free education, and free medical care if you cross the border illegally is a powerful incentive for people to do so. It especially makes no sense for the United States government to provide these services to those who are not in the US legally.

Likewise, the 40 year war on drugs has produced no benefit to the American people at a great cost. It is estimated that since President Nixon declared a war on drugs, the US has spent more than a trillion dollars to fight what is a losing battle. That is because just as with the welfare magnet, there is an enormous incentive to smuggle drugs into the United States.

We already know the effect that ending the war on drugs has on illegal smuggling: as more and more US states decriminalize marijuana for medical and recreational uses, marijuana smuggling from Mexico to the US has dropped by 50 percent from 2010.

Finally, the threat of terrorists crossing into the United States from Mexico must be taken seriously, however once again we must soberly consider why they may seek to do us harm. We have been dropping bombs on the Middle East since at least 1990. Last year President Obama dropped more than 26,000 bombs. Thousands of civilians have been killed in US drone attacks. The grand US plan to “remake” the Middle East has produced only misery, bloodshed, and terrorism. Ending this senseless intervention will go a long way toward removing the incentive to attack the United States.

I believe it is important for the United States to have secure borders, but unfortunately President Trump’s plan to build a wall will end up costing a fortune while ignoring the real problem of why people cross the borders illegally. They will keep coming as long as those incentives remain.

he nailed it right there.

these magnets were not always in place and i would ask him to explain the illegal immigrant reasons for coming to the USA in the 80s when they couldn't get these programs and before the war on drugs?

If a wall doesn't work according to Mr. Paul, he should take a tour of the history books of the Great wall in china, the East German wall, or the wall the that keeps control of the Palestinian's?

Three examples of why they work, and history to show it.

A nation that cannot, or does not control their border will not have a nation to long.

I agree, the wall will work, just because of the simple fact that in Trumps Presidency he is allowing the border patrol to actually do their job. That is something Obama had put a halt to. Build the wall and implement what Ron Paul is talking about, and we will have solved this problem. DONE!!!

Right..

I think most would support shutting down a company that fails to use E-verify for legal immigrants and citizens, for 90 days.

NO handouts of any kind, to anyone that isn't here as a citizen. Green cards that need assistance can go home.

build some tent cities to house those that are caught by border patrol and have a court right there to send them back, same day, same night.. Finger print scan and enter that into the database for prohibited from legal immigration.

Give medical aide to save their life, and then call ICE for pick up. Deport all illegals with convictions. send their kids back to their hometown for them so they don't have to break up their families.

update the law on citizenship to stop the anchor babies non-sense. If you are not here legally you can't be a citizen. That doesn't happen anywhere else in the world that i know of.

Build a wall, drive in seismic sensors, and put motion activated lights and thermal cameras with overlapping coverage and a highway for border patrol to run high speed up and down a no mans land between borders.
If things like Indian reservations don't want to allow the fence to follow the counties border, fine.. Go around them and leave them on the Mexico side of the fence. Your choice.

Solved.

How do these people get elected to office??? If we cut the $100 Billion Dollars per year in handouts, is $15 Billion to build the wall really so expensive????

HELLO!!! Looks like an $85 Billion Dollar profit to me!

The war on drugs is a no win situation, not fighting it is a bigger no win situation. The economic drain on our society caused by drugs is massive as well, and that's not going to improve if they legalize them. And, if they do legalize them, they'll all be taxed to death, and folks will be back into smuggling the stuff in anyhow.

cut the fraud from the EITC program alone and you could pay for the wall with the overpayments for less than 2 fiscal years - and that would still leave a huge budget overrun for the wall too

http://thehill.com/regulation/administra...ts-report-finds

Quote:The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) overpaid between $11.6 billion and $13.6 billion in tax credits designed to help low-income families in fiscal 2012 , the Treasury Department announced in a report released Monday.

Though the fiscal 2012 overpayment was among the agency's lowest in a decade, since 2003, as much as $132.6 billion has been improperly distributed as part of the EITC.

but we're broke. we cant afford a wall.

gee i wonder why.

yep, hopefully tax reform will finally fix that non-sense..

New tax codes should say the following.. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE WILL ANYONE GET MORE IN A REFUND THAN THEY PAID IN!

It's not a refund if you didn't pay it, it's a handout or Welfare, take you pick.

The illegal also needs a jail sentence, my suggestion is that any employer convicted of hiring illegals has to house and feed them in their personal residence for 90 days. House arrest with a leg monitor.

Giving US citizenship status to anchor babies must end.
Also, stop illegal aliens from sending money transfers back to mexico as well.

given the costs of illegals to us, at $50 billion & we pay for it, a wall would be a fast payback.

we have a $4 trillion annual budget, they spend $50 billion a pop on pet goodies all the time. given that size a scale, it amounts to a rounding error

Mass migration is one of the tactics that the ruling elites have been using to "fundamentally transform" countries around the world for a long, long time.

It is not by accident this has been the plan for many decades. How many years have we had wide open borders and unchecked immigration while officials lie to us and tell the borders are secure and everything is fine. They "the government" has been telling us that there is only about 11 million illegals in the USA for the last 10 years, which is a blatant lie as estimations are 1 million to 1.4 million illegals jumping the border anually. No one really knows the numbers, but experts are saying there is in upwards of between 40 to 80 million illegals within our borders.

It really hasn't been illegal immigration as much as it is an assisted invasion by the subversive elements within our own system. In the name of humanity and compassion of course.

I am not against legal immigration, but legal immigration is under the rule of law. What the left and many rino republicans are doing is in direct defiance of our nations laws. I want to believe President Trump is trying to do the right thing as this illegal immigration situation has been ignored and allowed to metastasize for far too long.

Importation of pot has dropped.
The Mex cartels are growing it in the US now.
Drugs takes an enormous amount of money out of our economy.
The drug war can work.
Ask Columbia.
When was the last time you saw Colombian Gold.
