I had 5 years of history with this color phase, notched ear boar…
This bear showed up to my bait area the first time in October of 2012 after I’d taken another mature boar in September.
He was already bigger then my 55 gal bait barrel !



For the next few years, I only ever got 2 daytime pics of him right before dark settled in. He was a smart old boar and very keen to the baiting game I think.
I believe he knew things weren’t quite natural and only visited during the cover of darkness from 2012 to early 2016.
I have 10’s of thousands of pictures and countless hours of trail cam video from that time frame.

During the first part of the 2016 Fall season here in Wyoming, he showed again and I got my first morning pictures of him days before season started.
This got me very excited that I might get a chance at him. Over the next couple months, we played cat and mouse with each other. I started thinking that I needed to try to call him with my FOXPRO CS24-C in the evenings.
We are very lucky here in Wyoming and can use our FOXPRO’s to call everything but waterfowl. He had showed a few nights within about 30 minutes of sunset making me realize he had to be hanging close by and maybe the call would get him in before shooting light faded.

I got to my stand early, set out my CS24-C close to the base of a tree about 43 yards away from my stand and let things quit down for about an hour.
I started off with a few cub distress and then did some jaw snaps/huffs. After a few times doing this, I looked at my watch and knew I had about 20 to 25 minutes left before dark.
I caught a movement from the corner of my eye and there he was !! 8 to 10 yards away from the base of my tree. He was standing there looking around for the other bears that were making the sounds. He crossed right in front of me and circled the caller down below. Finally, he moved to the left and I got a good shot at him. He didn’t go 20 yards after the shot. The FOXPRO did it …. After five years of waiting, watching and hoping.

He measured 7'3" long and 476 lbs his skull is 20" plus. Will be back shortly and will be measured dried.

That is a nice looking bear. Frissco, if Yotes2call used a legal method then I don't see a problem. There might be many different ways to hunt that I don't agree with. That doesn't mean that I am going to try and diminish someone else's accomplishment and experience.

Again, Yotes, nice bear. Don't let a downer like frissco take anything away from that hunt. You don't get a bear like that without putting in leg work.

Naw, I think he did quite well. It's like the first time you meet your future mother in law. If you don't walk up to her and kick her in the groin you're doing it wrong and setting all sorts of bad precedents for your future relationship.

He is just another stupid jealous hater, that has probably never killed a bear and has to make himself feel better by putting someone down who puts in lots of time to do it and get it done the right way.

Anyone that has ever put in the time, effort and dedication it takes to hunt bears in the Big Horns knows its not like Canada. And the mountains here don't lend themselves to spot and stalk in most areas. Baiting and calling are the most effective ways here.

We've taken 6 bears since 2010 and have helped out the ranchers/sheep herders tremendously !!

AWESOME!! Way to help out those ranchers and build good relationships. I had some experiences baiting and calling when I lived in Maine. In AZ we are not allowed to bait so many guys use dogs. I have called in 2 bears with my FoxPro and like you said, it is pretty tough and takes a LOT of work depending on the terrain.

The game and fish departments of each state decide what methods are legal and I will defer to their scientific methods of determining allowable take. Just too bad when someone has to criticize. If they don't like the way you hunt they don't have to support it but they don't have to go out of their way to trash another hunter. That's a good way to end up in a useless FaceBook style of argument, IMHO.

We hunt these bears in domestic sheep summer and fall grazing lands. We've taken 6 bears since 2010 outta there for the sheep herders. If it is a legal bear, it is killed. First year we started they had lost 87 lambs and ewes. This year it is 5 confirmed and 3 probable's.

That’d be cool to start hunting where it helps the ranchers. Our bear spot is a tucked away cedar woods where no cows would go. I started hunting coyotes to help ranchers in calving season but now here in Colorado I’m just out hunting em on the grasslands. Never hunted sheep territory but they probably get hit hard between the coyotes and bear. Wolves too right? Cool to see the positive impact on reducing predators though. Hope to see some more stories from your bear hunts!
