You shotgun callers???

Three questions:
1. Do you prefer a pump or semi auto for calling coyotes?

2. What barrel length do you prefer?

3. For the make and model of your shotgun what is the load that you find most accurate in your gun?

Thanks in advance.

I use a pump because that's what I bought for turkey hunting and it's now also turned into my coyote gun too. But if I were buying a new one I think I'd go with an auto for sure. Quicker follow up shots and less of a chance for ejection failures (short stroking the pump and causing a misfeed, done that before). Typically once you find a load that shoots well out of your gun you normally don't have ejection issues out of an auto. Just from my experiences anyways. I use a Mossberg 835 with the stock super full turkey choke that came with it and I have a decent pattern with the hornady heavy magnum coyote 3" 00 buck.

I shoot both but prefer semi.
I shoot 24".
Kicks Hi Flyer choke on Mossy 930, which is my main predator shotgun. Dead Coyote is great stuff if you want to pay for it. Shoots good in my guns. Clobbers animals. Otherwise #4 buck is great. I also like BB lead as well.

Mostly personal preference. Most chokes/ gun combos shoot a little different.

Rem 870, Rem 3" 4 buck with a Truglo turkey choke. The use of snap on sights for my shotgun rib really changes things. Allows me to aim a shotty, rather than point it...

Have always used my Ruger Red Label, 28" mostly because its my only 3" gun. Use dead Coyote or BB, we can't use any buckshot. Quiet to load and unload but found myself scrambling for follow up shots. I just bought a Mossberg 930, 28" "Duck Commander " model. Haven't taken it out but once, and am going to get a turkey barrel to use for coyotes. I have 5 pumps, all 2 3/4 and find them too noisy every time I move. Use what you like, but I like the auto.

I shoot:

Beretta 391 Optima 12ga, 28" bbl-Ex full factory choke

Rem 11/87 3", 28" bbl-Carlson turkey choke

Mossburg 500- 28"-hastings .660 ported

Rossi 12ga single bbl screw in chokes installed, Limbsaver recoil pad added. This is what I carry when I want to carry a shotgun and a rifle...you take your time when you only have one shot!

Ive used an 11 87 and an 870 I prefer the 1187. Less recoil makes for it being easier to get back on target for a second shot that all you have to do is pull the trigger.

I use handloaded ammo. I've only made a hundred rounds so far and have already saved money over buying DC. I used 4 buck before and it was okay. I think more pellets help alot.

1) Pump vs. Semiauto? - I prefer Semiauto, because I LOVE the M4, but either one is fine.

2) Barrel Length? I prefer 18-22" tubes, shorter, easier carrying, little easier to swing in tall grass without drawing attention.

3) Most accurate load? Benelli Super Nova and M4 - with either Patternmaster wad-strippers or 0.680" chokes (almost regardless of choke brand), Federal #4 buck tends to give me the tightest pattern and best balance of KO power vs. shot count. Nod of respect to Improved choke with Winchester Super-X 00Buck, which I started out using as a kid, and have taken many, many coyotes with over the last ~25yrs. Never my first recommendation, but it's the first thing I reach for if I run out of #4 Buck.

Beretta 391 silver mallard 28" barrel, 3" federal 1 7/8oz BB with a kicks 687 choke. Longest DRT on a yote to date 68 yards. I quit calling with a rifle years ago and switched to shotgun only after a hit n run bobcat I never found. I make sure the spots I call I don't have the opportunity to shoot over a hundred yards clearly so the animal has to come in close to find the call.

Semi hands down
Benelli M2 12ga
21" barrel or 24" if you cant find the 21"
2 3/4" or 3" 4 buck, BB's and T shot.

After missing several coyotes over the last few weeks at close ranges it got us rethinking the choke choices.
Typically we aimed to have the shotgun shoot tight out to 40 yards.
Well, in turn makes 10-20 yard patterns like softball sized. So when licking rounds off quickly at night at those close ranges. We were missing.
I opened the choke up and hit the range.
Now my pattern is wider from 20 on out. Should be more forgiving now.
Time will tell if I made the right choice.

Legacy sports escort 3.5" with a 26" bbl Carlsons improved modified, in this gun i found neither full nor modified were giving me the pattern I was looking for, and my Tru Glo extra full really seemed to open it up when Shooting Winchester 3.5" #4buck but patterned Winchester 2 3/4" #4buck nice and tight. If I run out of 3.5" I simply swap out the IM and screw in the extra full.

1. Mossberg 535
28" Barrel +2.5" choke
Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike
Winchester 3" Longbeard XR #4

If i can knock a 20lb+ turkey over like a bowling pin @ 50-60yds, it will def kill a thin skinned fox...we dont have enough yote around here to feel i need heavier shot.

How many fox have you knocked over at 50-60 yards with the lead #4 shot?
