I've been making little bets with people all my life, normally it isn't about trying to hurt the other person with insidiously cost prohibitive or egregious terms, it's about proving a point, bragging rights when you win. Every once in awhile people get stupid and let their mouth overload their sense of reason.
I may have said something about this example of someone getting a bit carried away, who bet me $1000. I asked him if he was sure, and if he could afford to pay me $1000. It started during a weekly pool tournament with a team that was all drywall contractors. The guys I shot with were all business owners, a real estate broker, a restaurant and bar owner, and an estate buyer. We would shoot for a few hours before a league night so we were practiced up. At the point we were about 14 games into the 16 we play they had only won a game or two and one of the guys was getting a bit heated up and insulting as he got drunker. He made a comment to me after being beat that they were working guys not deadbeats who could shoot pool all day long like we could.
I asked him what he was talking about, Larry ran his bar and was a real estate broker, we all ran businesses, I sold high end stereo and theater equipment. He said yeah right and how much do you make, I told him easily $30,000 a month. He called me a liar, said no way did I make that kind of money. I was laughing and telling him it was more than that, several other guys were trying to tell him they had no doubts about that. He told me to shut up, he'd bet $1000 I couldn't show him a year's worth of bank statements that supported $30,000 a month. I told him I could, he's lipping off like yeah right when. I said alright, suit yourself you are on, we have at least a dozen witnesses, we will meet at the Stadium Club after work, I'll have bank statements from my business branch.
There must have been at least a dozen guys that wanted to see it when I showed bank statements, I had stopped at the bank and asked them to print out 12 months of my account history month by month, they had a sheet that showed all 12 months just the deposits. The low was $90,000 and the high was $160,000. Paul came in after a lot of us were already there and said he didn't think I'd show up, did I have proof. I told him yep, in the car. When I opened the door he was asking how much the car cost, I told him sixty grand. To give you an idea of how clueless he was he asked how the heck I could afford that, I said I have a stereo business dumbazz, what do you think I was trying to tell you?
The waffling began, he said I thought you worked at a stereo store, not owned a store. I told him it didn't matter what he thought, he'd lost the bet. He started whining about how bad it would screw him up to pay $1000. I told him I didn't need his money, he could buy me a large draft and we were even, except for the bragging rights.
He had to put up with all the guys laughing and making fun of him for being such a [beeep]. Most said I was crazy for letting him off the hook.
In this situation when he called me a liar and threw out the thousand dollar bet challenge, I'd have been a wimp to decline, the only reason I would do that is if I was afraid I couldn't deliver the proof. He called the bet, it was up to me to step up to the plate or decline.
My point being that I threw out a friendly bet to a friend I like, he jumped on it because he is a Trump supporter. I said something about that bet weeks ago, and thought perhaps other Trump supporters would want a piece of that same bet for a case of beer. Some jumped on it right off the bat, then the same guys who are always there insulting and trolling try to make it like this was some sort of manhood thing to accept whatever stupid terms they think constitutes a real man challenge.
Then there's even part of the mob that had already taken the bet on the terms offered, and he decides for some reason that it is acceptable to change the terms and it's up to me to accept. Trying to change a bet after the fact is not okay, in fact I see no reason to accept any change or silly addition. The guy who asked me about orange juice or tea is fine and I accepted, although I would prefer a case of beer. Don't flip flop on the rules and call me names for declining different terms, it's my bet.
Honoring a bet means there is only one way to honor it, and that is to stick to the terms offered. I feel no sense of dishonor refusing anything but the simple terms of my bet, mine being the operative word. I offer a bet, you take it if it's acceptable, offer other terms before accepting it if it's not, if I refuse to accept modified terms you go on your way with no bet agreement. No harm no foul.
I feel like I'm dealing with retards that never learned how a bet works, go back and look at the running rant of a couple of guys and you would think we are talking about something serious like their sister's virtue.
Lighten up, I'm just trying to put aside a five year supply of good beer, and considering the nature of this thing it might cost me a few hundred dollars, it for sure is not a sure thing for me.
