Has anyone tried the Lyman borescope

Yes I have one, and I think they are worth every penny. It has made me realize that my cleaning process isn't good enough. One of the best things I've bought for a long time.

Here are three threads from another forum where they are discussed quite a bit with some pictures.

I have the new Lyman Bore scope and the Hawkeye, also.

Love both of them.

The Lyman's are so cheap it is hard to believe. Shooters can learn volumes with this tool about their barrels.

What you should expect to see:

cleaning rod wear in the bore
rust
pitting, especially in the last 1" of the barrel near the muzzle
voids or inclusions in steel
imperfect lands uniformity from end to end
fire cracking in front of the throat and then again about 12-17" down the bore, especially in magnum cases
Powder fouling in groove or on top of lands
Copper fouling smears-no telling how this may show up
uneven lands in the throat from being chambered crooked
chunks of metal gone on worn barrels
surface micro finish roughness or smoothness
Drill marks
Cutter drag marks on cut rifle barrels
Chatter marks on tops of lands
Rounded or missing lands from wear in front of the throat
Uneven lands wear pattern in throat due to barrel not chambered concentric with bore

Now, want to drive yourself crazy? You may be able to put 2 + 2 together to help you come up with a solution as to why your barrel may or may not be shooting up to expectations.

You WILL learn how your cleaning techniques are inadequate, and how much your barrel may be worn.

After waiting for months, I finally got one through Midway. The only
bad reviews I could find was one by a guy who left some cleaner in
the barrel which got into the lens, ruining it....so he gives the
unit a bad review (they should have made it idiot-proof!). The other
was by one who would have liked the resolution to be better, but
mine is fine. Perhaps it would be more noticeable if the view was
forward in the barrel instead of 90* to the lens.

I've only looked down the barrels of three rifles. Found chatter
marks in the grooves of a Sav 12, along with some small "pitting" or
otherwise deformities, yet it shoots great. Surprisingly, the
smoothest barrel I've come across is a RA Predator, with hardly a
thing noticeably wrong, yet it isn't as accurate as the Savage.
The worst barrel viewed is a Montana Rifle Company Model 1999 in
7mm WSM. No wonder I could never get it to shoot..." uneven lands
in the throat from being chambered crooked" is putting it lightly!
No lands for a ways on one side and barely touched lands on the
other! Had I had the Lyman borescope when getting that rifle (it's
been a few years ago) it would have immediately gone back before
ever getting shot and demanded my money back.

Yes, I've found a few interesting details, and am sure there will
be plenty more as I go through all my rifles.

it will not drive you crazy, just educate you. One thing that has shocked me the most is just how fast a 243 will shoot out the leade with anything but ball powder.

That was just what I was thinking! It might make me unhappy with a barrel that I was previously delighted with.
