6.5-284 help

I built a Savage 110 using a 24" BHW 6.5-284 barrel. Accuracy is excellent but I just can't seem to get the velocity I see in load manuals or online forums. I shot a few ladders for velocity this morning at a temperature of 4*. All the loads were in new Lapua brass, 140 Amax, Win LRM primers, 3.08" OAL.

Hybrid 100V
48gr 2735fps
48.5gr 2747fps
49gr 2770fps
49.5gr 2844fps
50gr 2887fps

Mag Pro
55.5gr 2709fps
56gr 2768fps
56.5gr 2792fps
57gr 2823fps

Retumbo
56.5gr 2883fps (stiff bolt lift)
57gr 2887fps (stiff lift, ejector stamp in brass)

With results like this I might as well have a 260 Remington or 6.5C and burn less powder for the same velocities. IMR4350 gave subpar velocity as well. I've read H4831SC works well and plan to buy some to try but so far I'm just frustrated.

You could run a 6.5x47Lapua and out run it buy a bunch with even less powder... I would give RL17 a shot and if you can find any RL26 may be your ticket...

I have two 6.5-284 one custom built for 1000yd shooting and a Savage Long Range Hunter. Both have 1:8 twist the Savage is a 26" braked barrel. I load 140g spbt bullets in Nosler brass using IMR 4831 and RL-22 I seat to .020 off the lands with good results. I recently moved to Texas from Iowa and am just getting settled in shooting. My plan is to fine tune these rifles when I find a decent range.

Jim, what loads did you use and what velocities are you seeing?

This barrel will shoot stupid small groups if I want but I have no desire to do it at 2800fps. I have 73rds down the barrel with velocities hovering around 2750-2850, two bullet types, three primers and four powders.

Crazy, These rifles will burn up barrels when going for 1000yds at over 3200 fps. I shoot 140match bullets over IMR 4831 at 46g should be around 2800 and for me very acquarate as I don't really care about velocity. RL-22 is also a good powder but can't find my reports on it. A hunting bullet will be close in too.

All true, but I intended for this rifle to be shot at targets beyond 1000yds and wanted the 3000fps out of it to extend that range.

I've read that, but have also seen people achieve the same velocities using Retumbo, Magpro and 100V. I would've started with H4831SC but couldn't find any until recently. I need to go buy it before it's sold out again. RL17 has done well for other people but it's not a very temp stable powder. My shooting temperatures range from well below zero to mid 70's.

This has not been my experience, but you might consider RL26 and 23.

Yes, it is temp stable. They have reformulated it a couple years ago to ensure such.

Shooting from -15º to 110º I noticed 75 FPS difference, and no pressure issues what so ever.
