25-06 loads

TN guy

First time poster here. I recently bought a new Remington 700 long range chambered in 25-06 it has a 26" bull barrel. I mounted a vortex pst 6-24x50 scope. I plan on using this gun as my coyote gun and occasional deer. Coyote shots will range between 250 and 500 yards.

I had a neighbor give me a box of 85 grain Nosler ballistic tips and a box of 115 grain nosler ballistic tips and about 60 hornady brass. I have some H4831sc on hand as well as CCI primers.

Does anyone have any suggested loads? Either with what I have on hand or do I need some other bullets, powder, or primers?

The 85 grain Nosler will work well with RL 19, starting load out of their No. 7 manual is 53.0 grains, max is 57.0. Around 3600 fps.

The 115 grains will work well with the 4831sc or IMR 4350, as the heavier bullets require a slower powder. Look at the Hodgdon site for load data for both of these powders. I have used both with the 117 Sierra, 115 Berger with almost the same results. Good speed and accuracy.

My sender does not like anything over 100gr bullets. So I have run the 75gr and 85gr through the gun. My powder for them 2 are Imr4064 and If I recall right both are right in the middle. They layout coyotes.

My Remington:

Winchester brass(this brass is real tough)
Win primer
57-58g of R#19
100g Speer btsp
Seated .040 off the lands
3300+fps
can shoot humming birds at 300 yards, no kidding

I used a std Forester neck sizer and bumped the shoulder a tad on every firing, never had to full length size, brass lasted 12 firings before they wanted to show signs of splitting at the web.

You will not get anywhere close to this load in speed with H4831, and I found that primer choice to be critical with R#19 in this load.

This is what my rifle likes with my lot number of powder, start lower and work up.

I am using H4831 and a 117 gr Hornaday SST's for a deer and yote load . I also use Remington 91/2M primers . Going to a mag primer improved my groups when I was developing a load. My Savage has a 22" barrel. Primers make a difference in the 25-06.

I have had good luck with my Browning A-Bolt.

H414
48 Gr
Sierra 100gr
WIN MAG PRIMER!!

Looking to work up some loads with the 85 BT Nosler in 4064 as well as 4350. Nolser calls out 43-47grains 4064 and 49.5-53.5 4350. They have a PDF file for this cartridge on their site.

I find that H4831 (my flavor is the SC version) works fine with the 85 BTs and I'm pushing a little over 3500 fps out of a 24-inch barrel. A little on the warm side, but no issues.

One of the 4831's, 4350s, Reloader 19 or 22 should work for you.

Don't be afraid to try Varget either. I use it and H4350 for the 75 grain bullets. Haven't tried 760 but it should work too.

I have owned and shot a Rem 700 Varmint Special in .25-06 for over 36 years, it's my favorite rifle. Been using 56.5 gr of RL19 with the Sierra 87 gr SP and Nosler 85 gr BT. Also burned a lot of IMR4350 but the RL19 gives me more speed. With RL19 I can get 3590 fps with the Nosler 85 gr.

As told by Ackleyman the .25-06 is sensitive to primers. Mine prefers Winchester and Federal BR, cases are Winchester.

Also had good luck with H4831sc but don't remember the charge. Accurate but no where near the velocity that RL19 gives me.
