Going to play with the son's 243 tomorrow and was wondering about H4350 with the 85 grain bullets. Anyone tried that combination? I'd appreciate your experiences if you please.

I have loads in mind of:

39.0 gr
39.5 gr
40.0 gr
40.5 gr

The IMR4064 is working well with these bullets (85 Sierra), but you know we always think we can do better ........

Had a rifle in 243 that would punch some decent groups with 87 grain bullets with 42 grains of H4350.

they were consistently right around 0.6" at 100 yds

I tried H4350 in my Savage 243 a little bit and it worked "okay" with the 85-90g bullets.

The last few months I have discovered IMR 4831 for the 85-95g class of bullets and could not be happier. Your results may vary but i4831 produces higher velocities than both Varget and IMR 4064 (which were my two main powders) and the accuracy is great. I can't compare the velocity to H4350 due to the fact that I have not tried H4350 since I bought my chronograph. I need to load up some and do that.

I know with the Sierra 85g HPBT 44.5 grains of H414 and Federal 210M Primers fly at 3220 fps and can group 1/2 MOA at 200meters.

Hodgson States on there website that H414 yields similar results to H4350 so i would imagine you could do quite well with it.

Hope that helps

I have tried several powders for the 243 over the years, and have found that W760 works in just about every bullet weight I've used. As far as I'm concerned, it is "THE" powder for the 243. I load 45.5 grains with a Sierra 85 grain HP, and depending on which rifle I'm shooting, it will chronograph an average of 3300 fps. Plus, I've shot this load in 4 different rifles, and it's been very accurate in all of them. I did work up a mild load for my granddaughter's 243 using IMR4064 and the 85 grain Sierra, and it is also a very good shooting load. I used 4064 in that one just to get rid of a partial can, otherwise it would have been 760.

A local old crotchety dyed in the wool gun guy suggested that combo to me said he had been using it for years and on multiple rifles. I tried it. He was right, again. It worked well for me.

I just loaded for a buddies .243 Tikka T3. Ended up running 43.0gns of H4350 with FC Brass and CCI-200 primers. Shot 0.17 at 100yds with velocity of 3085 with an SD of 12. Not the lowest SD, but plenty good for his truck gun. The next day he busted a yote at about 100yds and made total jello of the chest cavity.

My favorite 243 load is 42 grains of H4350 with an 87 grain V-Max or Sierra 85 grain bthp. It is nowhere near a max load but the rockchucks and coyotes can't seem to tell the difference. Remington brass and CCI 200 primer.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Good times will be had.
