20-250 AI has better BC than my 22-243 AI

I was shocked... there must be a mistake somewhere, because it shows this load doing twice as bad as my other ones.

Can that be true?

I posted this Blitzkings chart up there in the original post with the other two.

Well they should be differant, if not why would there be a reason to go 20-250 . The longer more pointy the bullet the better the BC.

Comparing two heavy for caliber bullets with high BC's to a run of the mill hunting bullet,,, of course the numbers are going to be skewed to the heavier higher BC bullets.

that is a very good point you made there Blue...

Eugene.... that is some very interesting stuff on that site...WOW...thanks so much. The funny thing is that I originally had this barrel throated exclusively for the Berger 90 VLD. I started out with them, and later started playing with 80 amaxes... don't ask me why... but I still have a lot of Berger 90's... just gotta get back in the saddle again.

Some Montana Gov Hunters turned me onto that 90 VLD for long range coyotes... it's a shooter for sure.

Some vld bullets do not kill well, take that to the bank.

Lets compare, a 55g 20 caliber bullet vs a 75g A max 22 caliber on a 600 yd shot on a coyote???? Hummm?????

Has everyone forgot about how sectional density has an effect?

I would take the 75g A Max first choice, but I am flying by the seat of my pants on this because I have zero experience with either.

Choosing a bullet that will expand in hunting situations on living breathing flesh is ALWAYS my first consideration in choosing a wild cat cartridge. Then, build a cartridge around that bullet.

The 22 caliber 75g and 80g A max are proven humane killing hunting bullets at long distance.

As the velocity slows way down at long range, it makes sense to have the aid of a poly tip to help in the expansion of the bullet jacket.

Of course, there is nothing like time in the field and hands on, proven experience to justify your choices.

I have a friend that was shooting the 20 BR on rock chucks, he quit using it due to too many chucks crawling off...what does that tell you about a much harder to kill coyote?

Respect your game animal, always use enough gun to kill humanely with bullets that expand.

I am sure that Dan will give us some reports of the 55g in the 20/250 as he harvests animals at various distances.

Personally, I like the horsepower of both cases, but a 90g Berger I would question until I saw it with my own eyes. I really hate to see bullets zip through a coyote. I did shoot a lot of coyotes with a 60 and 65g Berger in a 27" 22/250 AI and those two bullets killed with authority at 3600 fps in a 12" twist Hart barrel.

Dan, is the ballistics of the 20/250 better than the ballistics of the 22/243 AI? I am not speaking of BC, but the actual ballistics? I would think that you would be comparing the 55g Berger in the 20 vs the 75g A max in the 22/243 AI? I am guessing on your bullet choices of course.

Keith

I can't imagine shooting a coyote out to 800 yds, but the numbers really show up in the 600-800 range.

All three calibers where set to the same elevation..177ft...todays date for weather, same wind of 10 mph from 3 o'clock, scope height 1.75, humidity 70, temp 64. degrees, station pressure 30, everything the same. Only difference between them are their calibers, bullet weight, velocity, and BC.

All set with 300 yds zeroes...

Range - drop - Wind - Velocity - Time of Flight - Energy

Yards - Inches - Inches - Feet/Second - Seconds - Foot lbs

Yep ... You said it Keith. BC don't mean poop if the bullet don't kill.

Can't remember the bullet, but a I was shooting rockchucks with a friend from PM. He was running a 22 BR at lightning speeds and the bullet just zipped right through the chucks and they crawled off.

My 75 Amax which was a lil bit heavier and slower from a .223AI killed them dead as heck .

Distance was 640-650 yards.

I'm not thinking that the 55's will out do the 80's for long range killing power.... I was just amazed at the minor drop and wind drift between them.

I have a ton of 55's, 80's and 90's... something will work.

I also order some 20 cal 55's from Blackhole Bullets, that have the plastic tips... they should open up way better than the Bergers... we'll see.

I've shot quite a few of the 55gr tipped Blackhole bullets and on groundhogs they do not expand well at all the 55gr bergers did alot more damage these were shot out of my 20-250 at 3750 fps the bullets shoot well but IMO they don't expand better than the Bergers even with the plastic tip

Rich.... that is interesting.

I'll try them both out while making detailed records of each one's performance.

I can't wait to try them out. It will be fun and educational for sure.

Hopefully I will be making several posts on their performance.

Got some Blackhole 55's loaded up... now I just need to go test them out on some critters... and a target or two to see how they shoot... which I'm sure they will be wonderful.

Their accuracy is not going to be my concern... they will be great.... but coyote killing power will be the real test.

The 20 with the Bergers and the Blackholes will be the first ones to the coyote lines.
