Investigations have been launched at two universities over accusations that fraternity members taunted wounded war heroes, urinated on an American flag, and spit on a wounded veteran and his service dog in Panama City Beach, Florida.

The April 17 incident, involving Zeta Beta Tau fraternity members from the University of Florida and Emory University, has infuriated residents of Panama City.

“They were being treated like the Vietnam veterans were treated,” said Linda Cope, the founder of the Warrior Beach Retreat.

The local charity provides an annual all-expense-paid vacation for more than a 100 combat-wounded warriors and their spouses or caregivers. All of the expenses are covered by Panama City Beach residents and businesses.

Cope tells me the fraternity members were staying in the same resort – and caused a night of mayhem. The college kids made derogatory comments about the warriors’ wives, threw items off balconies and desecrated an American flag.

She also said one of the warriors and his service dog were spit on.

Television station WJHG identified that man as Nicholas Connole.

“They actually spit on me and my service dog as well, and that’s just so disrespectful and it hurts,” he told the television station.

There were local reports of frat boys throwing beer on veterans and ripping an American flag out of the ground.

“This happened because of two fraternities causing heartache for these warriors and that should never have happened – never happened,” Cope said. “Shame on them. There was no excuse.”

Reaction has been swift.

Zeta Beta Tau International confirmed that three members of the University of Florida chapter have been expelled from the fraternity and both university chapters have suspended all activities.

“There is no doubt that some of our members engaged in ugly and unacceptable behavior,” Executive Director Laurence Bolotin wrote in a statement. “Their actions have no place in ZBT or anywhere, and they will not be tolerated.”

Bolotin issued a personal apology to the veterans and their families as well as the Warrior Beach Retreat organization – calling the behavior disgusting.

“I am deeply saddened that the actions of our members ruined this special event and failed to show the respect our military and their families deserve,” he wrote.

To the fraternity’s credit, they have promised to make amends for what they called a “disgraceful situation.”

W. Kent Fuchs, the president of the University of Florida, wrote a personal apology to Cope and the Warrior Beach Retreat.

“I can only imagine the pain and indignity of enduring this behavior,” he wrote. “I want to assure you that it is not representative of our students or our university and we will make every effort to learn more, take appropriate action and prevent similar incidents from occurring again.”

Emory University, on the other hand, said it cannot confirm that any of their students were involved in the despicable behavior.

“If any members of our community are identified as being responsible, they will be held accountable for their actions by the university,” read a statement from the Georgia school.

Cope told me the residents of Panama City Beach are “up in arms about what happened.”

“This community is so patriotic and supportive,” she said. “The fraternities are learning a hard lesson. You don’t treat these men and women who have sacrificed so much for your freedom like that.”

I like to turn the other cheek but in some cases I believe the best way to go is to set an example discouraging this behavior in the future. If I saw this happening to one of my brothers. It would be ugly and may involve someones teeth on a curb

I am glad that i wasn't there, it's so sad that this behavior is acceptable in todays youth.. Where are they getting that?
What sad excuses for Universities, Frats, and parents when these kids act like that.

They think they are tough, they think that taking a couple of MMA classes makes them a bad boy, but they really never realize there is a difference when you are trained to kill.

It's about time for the laws to change and Men in all communities need to stand up and stop being hushed by women and get these things under control..

This also goes for these roving gangs of teens just beating people.. It's got to stop and its the parents failure.

I just hope that all of those involved are prosecuted.

Yep... that would be the problem hm! However... the same holds true for parents who don't discipline their children, as well. If you are not taught that there are repercussions for your actions when you act ignorantly, you will continue to act ignorantly. When taught there are repercussions for your actions, that you will get your [beeep] beat, if you act ignorantly, it tends to lead one to think before acting ignorant. Unfortunately, to many of today's youth aren't afforded that lesson.

I think that the parents of these youths are the ones referred to in the latter half of your signature line!

Ya, well just so some of you know...

If you yell at someone, in some communities, that is considered distrurbing the peace and can be charged for fighting with that, even if you don't touch them, threaten them, or do anything other that voice your displeasure.

FYI... Just be aware.

The big wigs, the administrators have all issued apologized, but where is the apology from the "little darlings" that did the spitting and desecrating of the flag? I believe each of them along with their parents should also be offering public apologies. I normally wouldn't include parents in things like this, but the "little darlings" were all of adult age, but since they acted like spoiled children, their parents need to be shamed in public along with their "children".

I realize that desecration of the flag is protected under "freedom of speech" (which should not be the case IMO) but I would hope that spitting on someone would be some level of assault and that little SOB should be charged and forced to apologize and perform public service at the very least!
I salute the veterans that managed to hold their tempers; not sure I could restrain myself if someone were to spit on me.

If their parents weren't guilty of failing to properly teach their children respect for others, they too would have come forth and offered their apologies by now, and drug their children, kicking and screaming by the hair of the head and made them offer theirs.

You can't blame parenting on everything. Some kids are just staring stupid and disrespectful. It's a dam shame that (kids) these days don't know the value of what they have. This is crowd mentality, and I think their new crowd should be wearing fatigues and teach them the very purpose of what they stand for.

Oh yeah... Had my father raised those children back in his younger days, they would have known better than to spit on ANYONE, EVER. You were NOT disrespectful, and if you got staring stupid, he'd smack you up side the head hard enough to make your eyes roll round and round like the reels on a slot machine, and when they stopped, you weren't inclined to stare at anything anymore!! Because at about that point you were getting your [beeep] tore out the frame, and when all was said and done, and you had changed your mind about being disrespectful, he would take time out of his schedule to escort you to apologize to whoever you had disrespected, to ascertain that you apologized properly.
