I've always been curious about drilling/tapping a bolt carrier. Is that all that's involved or are there any heat treating steps or other voodoo involved?

That's going to be neat, looking forward to seeing it complete and some targets.

There is a secrete, Carbide. It's a must when cutting bolt carrier groups. The NiBn is almost Rc60 and will destroy HSS.

Go slow use oil.

OK Ab, now my interest has increased. What advantages does a side charger have over the standard system with a charging handle?

Does the added weight of the knob on the BCG affect accuracy or wear on the rifle since it moves with every cycling of the bolt?

The only thing it allows, and there are other fixes for it, is to run a scope low and over the charging handle. I like them as I don't have to leave the rifle to charge or expel a round. It also doubles as a forward assist. This type of handle moves with the bolt, there isn't even 2oz added to the weight of the bolt and the handle rides inside the groove causing no discernable wear. It's another way to fix a minor issue while keeping the "cool" factor up.
