FBI Runs 2 1/4 Million NICS Background Checks As of 30 Nov 2014

Quote:As of November 30, 2014, the FBI has run more than 200 million background checks for firearm transfers. The exact number was 200,226,838, aka 200 megaguns.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that there 200 million guns were sold in the U.S. or that there are 200 million new gun owners. The FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System only tracks the number of background checks during potential sales, which can include multiple guns per exchange, as well as used gun sales.

In a 2013 study, Pew Research estimated there are between 270 million to 300 million guns circulating in the country. While an exact figure of gun owners is unknown, Pew also estimates of the U.S. population — more than 316 million — roughly 37 percent own a firearm or firearms.

The only question remains, who takes the crown as the number one state when it comes to buying and transferring guns?

The winner, with 2,196,487 transfers, is Kentucky, the “We got a ton of guns, no joking” state, with California, Texas, Illinois and North Carolina trailing behind.

According to statistics from the FBI, of the more than 200 million checks performed, denials account for 0.32 percent of all federal background checks processed.

What does that have to do with anything in this thread?

On another not, I have noticed longer NICS wait times. Also, the Wal-Mart Black Friday sale severely bogged down the NICS. Lots of guns moving this year. Obama and his socialists chronic shave done far more to help gun sales then hurt them, as they intended.

I ordered a Henry 22 Magnum Pump down here in Florida, with me being a North Dakota resident. Told the guys at the Pawn Shop I'd had a gun transferred down here that I bought on-line, at another shop, and what the other dealer had gone through and eventually learned, so they just called it in when I picked it up. Dealer got all sorts of questions!!!

All the usual questions, then...

What is he doing in Florida?
Where does he work?
Why is he buying a gun in Florida?
Several more lame questions the dealer really had no business knowing the answer too.

Fortunately I has visited with him at length while the other guy was ordering the gun for me the week before, so he sounded like he'd known me all my life standing there rattling off answers on the phone. Took probably 15 - 20 minutes to process, she put him on hold at one point, he looked over at me and said, "Way too many questions! Must be a slow day at the office, and she's lonely or something." She finally cleared me, and I walked out with it. I've been through worse, but since getting my concealed carry permit it's usually a 5 minute call.

I think that the average citizen, when compared to the actual 'shooting community' never considered owning, or needing, a firearm until the Assault Weapons Bill was signed into law and took effect iin 1994...

Whether acknowledged, or not, it's my belief that the AWB was the catalyst that shook a lot of people out of their personal security doldrum and they started to realize that the Second Amendment was actually under attack, as well as "Big Brother" flexing muscle and their rights were being curtailed to a degree...That is a scary thought when reality actually starts to set in...While there were small upticks in firearm purchases after the Watts and related riots back in the '60s, it was mostly localized to specific areas involved...

In recent years, we have seen the invasion of Mexican, and other, gangs that have no compunction about a wide range of openly criminal activity that includes Home Invasions and commercial Armed Robberies, as well as Drug Cartel intimidation and reprisals..While gang activity is not new, it's usually under a degree of control within specific ground rules by the gangs themselves....Recent incidents, such as the spreading protests that were generated by the activities in Ferguaon, MO that are showing up in other unrelated cities tend to shake the normally complacent..

Mr. and Mrs John Q Public has become deeply fearful and concerned...They are not, and probably never will be, part of a "Militia" or subversive group (as much as some of the 'antis' would like to promote), but as a result, Concealed Carry classes are flourishing and firearm/ammo sales have gone out of sight as a result..

With so many new guns and new gun owners, and many states
getting very lenient about open and concealed carry you'd think
that people would get used to seeing guns again and stop calling
for a swat team everytime they catch a glimpse of a gun.

I have no problem with a person who open carries. I personally
choose to not OC but I think one good thing is people would
eventually learn that not every gun is a mass murderer.

Bill, you're not wrong. It's something that the antis simply do not get:

the harder they push in attacking our rights, the more people respond by taking up what it is they're told they shouldn't be allowed to have.

That is so true, I've said it for nearly 20 years. We largely owe the popularity of the AR15 to the '94 AWB.

how does anyone know that your an honest law abiding citizen. imo honest citizens should have nothing to hide. are you suggesting there shouldnt be checks....seems like guns in the wrong hands to me just saying

While the goal of keeping guns out of the wrong hands is a noble one, have you ever stopped to consider just how well that's working for us?

I don't think it's working at all. We spend a fortune in time & money & law enforcement resources on it, yet we:

1) Have no shortage, NONE, of people who are prohibited by law from possessing a gun having a gun. see the news on any given day.
2) A distinct lack of such people being prosecuted & taken off the streets when we catch them attempting to buy one. the last year numbers have been reported on showed that over 70,000 people had been denied permission via the NICS system, yet for that year there were only about 40 of them prosecuted. The rest went on their merry way 7 were free to go about getting a gun through other means.

why are we spending so much to identify them if we aren't then going to prosecute & confine them, ensuring that they can't carry out what ever criminal intent they might have? This is a slam dunk prosecution, they sign the papers to buy a gun & get caught. the law requires a minimum of 10 years in prison for this.

Criminals do not go hat in hand & ask the govt for permission to get a gun (and if they do bother, they don't suffer any consequences for it), why should you?

Kind of curious about what that has to do with this thread to but from your statement and how you seem to boast about it you must be part of the 99% then.

On a side note kind of cool to see California on there when they are so liberal. Good to see there are gun owners trying their hardest to own a firearm. We as gun owners have to stay together

The bad guy will always have a way to get a firearm. They won't go and have their background check ran because they arnt a law abiding citizen. Yeah citizens shouldn't have nothing to hide but we are also entitled to our own privacy to. Background checks are stupid. I don't have to run one for a private sale. Just another way for govt to make money just like the $200 tax stamp for NFA items.

One of the major problems is the lack of enforcement on the firearms laws that currently exist...

Case in point: Several years ago, Missouri enacted a specific law that added a mandatory three years to any conviction where a firearm was used in the commission of a crime...Sounds pretty good, huh...

The various prosecutors began using that three years as a bargaining chip to get a guilty plea, usually with probation or light sentence and they would drop that mandatory three years...Supposedly to save the State a bunch of money in trial costs...So much for the deterrent effect...

Previously convicted Felons that are caught with a firearm are supposed to be prosecuted at any of several levels...Doesn't happen most of the time...Another bargaining chip...

I can only guess at how many potential buyers lie on the 4473 form and when found out, nothing happens, unless they are either under a current investigation, or wanted as a result of a closed one...

I am an Honest Citizen and I shouldn't have to be Taxed to practice My Second Amendment RIGHT, because it is a God given Right according to our Constitution.

Background checks are a form of harassment is all it is.
