Off-duty Fayetteville officer pepper sprays crowd fighting outside mall

Fayetteville, N.C. — Fayetteville police say an off-duty officer sprayed a crowd of people with pepper spray early Wednesday after a fight broke out at Cross Creek Mall.
The fight happened around 4:15 a.m. after a crowd gathered at a mall entrance between Sears and JCPenney to wait for the sale of a popular brand of basketball shoes at Finish Line.
The officer, whose name was not released, was working in an off-duty capacity when he saw the fight, police said. He got a can of pepper spray from the trunk of his vehicle and used it on the crowd.
Police responded to the mall and got the fight under control.
The police department plans to conduct an internal investigation into the off-duty officer's use of pepper spray "to ensure that all departmental policies and procedures were adhered to during the incident," police said in a statement.
