Ferguson Protesters Met By Hecklers Shouting Obscenities In One Missouri Town

NYPD Publicly Executes Eric Garner For Illegal Cigarettes

A group of Ferguson protesters peacefully marching from Saint Louis to Missouri’s capital, Jefferson City, received a less than warm welcome in the Mid-Missouri town of Rosebud, KRCG (Columbia/Jefferson City, Missouri) is reporting.

Led by NAACP president Cornell Williams Brooks, about 50 people participating in the March For Justice met with hecklers — some shouting obscenities — in the Gasconade County town. The Columbia Missourian reports that about 200 people — half the population of Rosebud — showed up for the counter protest, which included a display of fried chicken, a watermelon, and a 40-ounce beer bottle placed in the middle of the street. At least one person carried a Confederate flag.

A boy of about 8 years old was reportedly holding a sign that read “Go Home.” At least one bullet was fired, shooting out the back window of the bus carrying the Ferguson protesters. Two other hecklers drove ahead of the bus as it left town in order to meet the protesters in Mount Sterling, the group’s stopping point for the evening.

Rosebud resident John Sharp told KRCG that the people of Rosebud support law enforcement, not lawbreakers.

“Rosebud is a very strong community. We believe that we should stand behind our law enforcement, stand behind our community and we don’t believe in supporting thugs.”

Rhea Willis of Velda City, Missouri, along with her 15-year-old daughter, were marching with the Ferguson protesters and endured the taunts and hatred from the counter protesters. Cheyenne tells the Missourian that she plans to write about her experiences with the hecklers for her school newspaper.

“I’ve been brought up to know how to deal with people like that. I ignore them and keep moving forward.”

Cheyenne’s mother Rhea compared her experience in Rosebud to what her own parents must have endured as civil rights activists in the 1960s.

“The comments that we saw are pure ignorance.”

Among some of the milder remarks you can here in the video posted above are “[Unintelligible] idiots!” :)59); “Go home!” (1:03); and “He was a thug, not a hero!” (1:06).

Rosebud is a town of about 400 people, which, according to City-Data.com, is 95.8 percent white. It’s about 50 miles from Jefferson City and was the next to last stop for the March for Justice before reaching Jefferson City on Friday.

Cornell Williams Brooks says in the video that the response his group received in Rosebud has not been typical of what his group of Ferguson protesters has encountered elsewhere in Missouri.

“What we have seen is an extraordinary array of citizens of Missouri brought us coffee, hot chocolate, sandwiches, refreshments, all along the way without being asked.”

Do you believe the Ferguson protesters got the reception they deserved in Rosebud?
