25x45 Sharps Update

Now that they are shipping barrels, we will have our review up soon, along with a short hunt video. I was using their rifle, with their 87 grain loads and got great results. I was trying for hog earlier this year, but it didn't work out. I did kill two coyotes with it. Needless to say, the round dropped them immediately.

I'm interested to see how you guys do with it, especially on larger game like deer or hog.

I would like to see Ruger add this round to their new American Ranch rifle, it's going to be offered in 223 and 300 Blk Out. While I enjoy my AR on the range I don't care to hunt with it. I prefer bolt actions for hunting, CZ's little 223 rifle would be great for the 25 Sharps. I thought the ad on the new round was odd comparing it to the 257 Roberts when it would be much closer to the 250 Savage. I read they were claiming 3000fps with a 87gr bullet out of a 20" that seem fast that would match the 250 Savage.

I ordered .257 90 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips.

Regular or Magnum primers?

e-tips?

Never heard of a 90 gr bt

I'm going to run either 90 gr hp or 80 gr ttsx

I loaded some 90 gr sierra gk hp's Reloader 7 23.5 gr's. blew the primers out, got the data from ar forum. SRC barrel, 18" rifle length tube adjustable gas block. I will reduce the load to 22 gr's see what happens?

OK, now I loaded 21.5 grs reloader #7 same sierra 90gr hp. chrono'd at 2640. Accuracy is excellent. No flattened primer's, looks like this is a good one.

Good luck! I look forward to your results!

Back from the hunt. My ar collected 4 whitetails and 2 javelinas. The 90 grain sierra stopped them dead in there tracks, no tracking. All broadside shots. The 25 x 45 for Deer is excellent, hard hitting. I am impressed by this cartridge. Shots averaged 130 yrds to the longest 168.

223 gauges would be used when evaluating the barrel for headspace. The same are used in the 17-223, 20 Practical and 6X45.

Been doing pretty well with the 25-223AR. Pushing Nosler 25/85 at 2750 w a 16.5" barrel. The 87gr Hornady SP at 2800, 75gr sierra HP at 2850. 100 gr Hornady interlock at 2600, 100 gr privi partisan 2550. This is all with AA2200 & CCI 450 primers.

Who is making the 65gr bullets??

All these with the 25/85 Nosler SB BT

Posted this on another thread as well...

I've had mine built for about a year. It's taken that long to get some load testing (lack of chronograph until recently).

I've gotten the following through my 18" barrel:

70gr Sierra BK ~2935fps with 27gr R10X
75gr Hornady VMax (Bulk packs through Midway) ~2993fps with 27gr R10X and ~2907fps with 24gr IMR4198
85gr Nosler BT ~2728fps with 22gr R7 and the same with 23.2gr IMR4198
87gr Speer Hot-Cor ~2864fps with 27gr R10X and ~2814fps with 24gr IMR4198

These were chrono'd with my new Oehler 35p. Average of 5 shot groups.

I've bumped up the charge on the 70, 75 and 87 gr bullets with 4198 and R10x. Hoping to chrono next week. I've also ordered some Barnes 80gr bullets to try out. I have some 90gr SBK to try as well.

I'll try and keep this and the other thread updated. I'm determined to hit 3000fps consistently with the 70 and 75 gr bullets.

Would love to have one but can't really justify it currently. Was looking on sharps website a couple days ago at price of parts and complete uppers.

Updated:

70gr Sierra BK ~3015fps with 27.2gr R10X
75gr Hornady VMax (Bulk packs through Midway) ~3007fps with 27.sgr R10X and ~2990fps with 24.4gr IMR4198
85gr Nosler BT ~2728fps with 23.2gr IMR4198
87gr Speer Hot-Cor ~2880fps with 27.2gr R10X and ~2855fps with 24.4gr IMR4198
90gr Sierra BK ~2521fps with 21.7gr R7 and ~2575fps with 22.1gr IMR4198

All loads with IMR4198 have some room to grow as well.
