Probably out of boredom my wife suggested we go calling for a couple of days. High temps mid day but not too bad for a few hours in the mornings. We made a total of 5 or 6 stands and called in 3 coyotes killing two of them.

My wife takes pictures while I call and shoot. This coyote came in on the second stand of the morning and my wife took the picture at just the same moment that the bullet struck him.

I was using an open reed call that I bought from Kerry Carver a while back. I see a lot of posts on this board about Ecallers vs hand calls. New guys asking if hand calls really work. Why, yes, they do and often as good or better than an Ecaller. Don't get me wrong. Right now I own 2 Foxpros and I love them. They are a convenience and really good for using in tight quarters when a guy is hunting alone. Kerry makes a great hand call and is experienced in using them.

Looks good! I think that the sounds that come from every hunter on a hand call are so unique that predators used to hearing E Calls get more curious.

Great pic!

I have several of Kelly's calls and I really like them, especially the Swift call.

Where are you located in Oregon?

The wet side about an hour SW of Portland.

Ken, great to see out after them. I like my Swift call as well. It's a great sounding hand call and calls them in.

That's a great photo.

Tim, I used the Swift call Ed gave us a few years back with great success. I like the open reed for the large variation in sounds you can get out of it. Anything from a full blown adult jackrabbit to a mouse squeak.

Plus using the hand call gives you far more control of the situation. Sometimes when a critter is hung up the high pitch squeak gets them moving in.

I have to laugh. My wife has been tagging along on these hunts trying to get a picture but until this day she just can't seem to see the animal approaching. Except for the ones I called to withing kicking distance. Then she got so excited she forgot to take the picture. lol This time I saw the coyote approaching and pointed it out to her. I got her a nice Nikon 5100 camera for Christmas and not only did she get a good coyote picture but a classic kill shot.

The next coyote I called and killed she never saw until we walked out. I'll admit, [beeep], it was a tough one to see. It came in slow and cautious. It stopped in a clear spot in the sage and I popped him. There seems to be a good crop of coyotes this year. When it cools off a bit more I will go back.

Great picture. I wish my wife suggested we go calling. She's not outdoorsy so if we have some extra money and time I usually get dragged to the casino to give my money to the natives haha
