Two Navy F/A-18 Hornets crash over western Pacific Ocean
Published September 12, 2014
DEVELOPING: Navy officials have rescued one pilot and are searching for another after two F/A-18 Hornets crashed in the western Pacific Ocean.

Initial reports indicate that the aircraft were assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 94 and Strike Fighter Squadron 113. One pilot was quickly located and returned to the USS Carl Vinson to receive medical attention. Search efforts are ongoing for the second pilot, according to a Navy release.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

The search for the second pilot includes guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyer USS Gridley, as well as helicopters assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 15 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron.

The two aircraft, which cost roughly $57 million apiece, have not been recovered.

When plains go down in the ocean, other than some debris I figure you can pretty much write off recovering them...

It is curious the odds of this happening simultaneously... I would look into possible sabotage from a disgruntled service member on ship, before suspecting hostile aggression from an enemy force...

Hopefully they recover the other pilot in good health... Prayers for the families...
