“You’re going to have to protect yourselves,” warns Miami-Dade police rep after budget cuts announced
7/10/14 | by Chris Eger

Following disclosure of the new Miami-Dade County budget that could slice some 600 police department jobs, the head of the police union is making dire predictions about public security.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s $6.2 billion budget request for 2014-2015 has some $64 million in cuts to various areas of the department. The proposed cuts, made public Tuesday, have some law enforcement professionals issuing stern warnings to the public.

“If the mayor’s not going to provide security, then my recommendation, as an experienced law enforcement officer for nearly 40 years, is either buy yourself an attack dog, put bars on your windows and doors and get yourself some firearms because you’re going to have to protect yourselves,” said John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade Police Benevolent Association to WSVN news.

The reason for the increase in self-reliance for Miami-Dade County residents concerned about their protection, Rivera said, is that, “We won’t be able to.”

The Miami-Dade Police Department is the largest local law enforcement department in the state, and one of the ten largest in the nation, tasked with serving some 2.5 million persons. The mayor’s 21-page police budget would institute a number of wide reaching cuts department wide.

Several specialized units including the Incident Management Team, Sport Unit, Tactical Narcotics Team, and one of the three Special Response Teams in the city would be disbanded. The department would be forced to shutter one of its nine stations, specifically the Midwest District Station, as well as closing the Corrections Department’s “Boot Camp” rehabilitation program for young inmates.

Almost every division in the department, with the exception of the current 45 administrative leadership positions, would lose personnel. This ranges from four officers cut from Community and Youth Outreach to 17 domestic violence investigator positions eliminated in the Special Victims Bureau, responsible for following up on allegations of child abuse.

In all, some 228 sworn positions and 57 civilian staff would be eliminated. A further 316 current vacancies would likewise not be filled, and with the freeze in hiring, some 50 officer candidate spots would be trimmed from the police academy.

The warnings by Rivera echo’s similar remarks made by Detroit Police Chief James Craig following widespread defensive gun use in that city by armed citizens and concealed carry holders.

“There’s a number of CPL holders running around the city of Detroit. I think it acts as a deterrent,” explained Craig, who made the comments on a local radio show last December and has since stuck by them. “Good Americans with CPLs translates into crime reduction,” Craig said.

Florida, as of June 30, has 1,281,073 concealed firearms permits issued to its residents, more than any other state in the country. Further, a record number of pro-gun bills were signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott in this legislative session.

However, all may not be lost in Miami-Dade’s latest budget battle.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez is proposing a plan of concessions from labor unions to include a 15 percent reduction in healthcare costs, mixed with a series of millage rate adjustments, which he contends will stay police layoffs.

“If we were to keep the same millage rates, and were successful in our negotiations, we could potentially restore all budgeted sworn positions in the police department,” wrote the mayor in a message accompanying the proposed budget.

The budget is set for discussion with the city council and would take effect Oct. 1.

This is another in the latest scam by which mayors in third world failed states like California, New Yack, Florida, and Illinois attempt to blackmail their way to Federal handouts. They call a press conference and in a bleating voice declare, essentially, that they are unable to protect their own residents because of "budget cuts".

There are no budget cuts. Only a lack of priorities and a waste of taxpayer money. Show me a city that has LOWER property taxes now than they did 10 years ago? So much for "budget cuts".

Stop begging for federal handouts. If you've got a problem in your state or city, cut spending or raise you own taxes and deal with it.

Simple.

All these "specialized units" units and one of the largest localized police forces in the nations...and they tell their citizens they are not going to be able to protect them, buy a dog, put bars on the windows and surprisingly they encourage citizens to buy guns?

Sounds to me this type of rhetoric would also be an effective tool to instill fear and lend justification to the militarization of a police force...The police are meant to have a role in the community and arming them to military levels defeats this and alienates them from the rest of society. Our government constantly tells us we are under threat from terrorist... "Iraq is now going to become a breeding ground for terrorists", "the terrorists killed 4 NATO troops", "terrorists high jacked the plane", "terrorist attack thwarted" and my favorite "believed to be linked to Al Qaeda" etc. on and on and on and.... "terrorism" is just a code word for any kind of political violence (or even non-violence, if the definition is streched out enough...) it's a method of terroristic governing..

All this money being spent militarizing the state's police apparatus has nothing to do with "terrorism" nor taking down a shoplifter at Wal-Mart or any crime in between and never did - it's all preparation on the part of the state for a massive civil uprising to prevent a full-blown civil war if the current administration sponsors a false fag attack or once Peak Oil hits and the economy goes straight into the sh-tter (what we are experiencing now is but a *taste* of what's to come): the only thing regular people can do now is form militias, stockpile weapons and supplies and prepare themselves to fight off the coming darkness...

State of Florida has handed down some huge budget cuts over the last several years, trying to keep their budget in the black. Governor Rick Scott is a successful businessman, not a career politician. When the state began to run in the red, he simply told EVERYONE that there were going to be changes, and that they had to learn to live within their means. The trickle down effect hit education first. Schools were hit with having to make adjustments to their spending; several implemented policies that kids would have to pay for their own sports uniforms... you should have heard the entitled screaming about their chilruns not being affoded the opportunity to participate! Couldn't afford $150/year to pay for their uniforms. Not just a uniform; uniforms to participate in all the sports they played throughout the school year. I'm sorry... tell your child if he wants to play sports to set up a lemonade stand, was cars, or give up one pair of the new Nikes that we the tax payer are going to buy him. If he doesn't want to play bad enough to earn $150 some how, then he can stay home.

I really have a difficult time feeling sorry for the police department when the article starts naming things like the "Sports Unit" is going to have to be dissolved as a result of budget cuts. Tells me the tax payer is footing the bill for police presence at all the ball games in town. Increase the price of the tickets to see the ball game and pay for the police being their, or let the billionaire owners foot the bill for their own damm business ventures in some other fashion. Why should the tax-payer, most of them like myself, who NEVER attend these games, have to foot the bill for providing police covergage at these events? Bust a few drug dealers and auction off their personal property. There are ways to make ends meet, the crying it's going to be a war zone and you're on your own routine is a crock of sh1t. Learn to operate within a budget, as we all must do within our own financial realities. It's tough times, and it's going to get tougher, GET OVER IT, adjust your budget, make your cuts, and do your damm job. Obviously the police chief isn't too concerned about protecting the people, if the only division in the department that didn't see cuts is Administrative Leadership.

This rhetoric is also designed to instill fear in the hearts of no-minded liberals that control the city purse strings, and anti-gun lunatics with lots of money throughout the community... "OMG!!! The police chief is telling everyone to buy a gun! It's going to be a war zone!! We need to raise everyone's taxes."
