Seattle Approves Country's Highest Minimum Wage of $15

The Seattle City Council on Monday unanimously approved a $15 hourly minimum wage — the highest in the nation.

The ordinance, which phases in the increase over time, passed a committee last week with a few changes. It would take effect next April and allow a sub-minimum wage for teens.

The ordinance was drafted by an advisory group of labor, business and nonprofit representatives convened by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. It would phase in wage increases over three to seven years, depending on the size of the business and employee benefits.

The City Council voted 9-0 in front of a sometimes raucous audience that frequently interjected cheers, applause and shouts of “Shame on you!” as the council debated several changes to the measure.

Seattle’s higher minimum wage would surpass San Francisco’s minimum of $10.74 an hour.

Washington state also has the highest state minimum wage, at $9.32 an hour.

Some small business owners worry that a higher minimum wage could put them out of business.

The International Franchise Association, a Washington, D.C.-based business group that represents franchise owners, said it plans to sue to stop the ordinance.

"The City Council's action today is unfair, discriminatory and a deliberate attempt to achieve a political agenda at the expense of small franchise business owners," the group said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a group called 15 Now led by Socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant is collecting signatures for a ballot measure that would create an immediate wage hike for large businesses and a three-year phase-in for small business.

“Our victory is not complete, but we have fought until the last day, the last hour, against all the loopholes demanded by business,” Sawant said before the council vote. “$15 in Seattle is just the beginning.” (FIFY: “$15 in Seattle is just the beginning of making this city into another Detroit.")

It really does seem hard to believe that these people have an education. When cheeseburgers cost 10 bucks no one will buy them. When no one buys them, these businesses will shut down and these workers will be worse off than they were on $8 an hour..... This doesn't seem that hard to understand?

The McDonalds in Midland and Odessa and a lot of the surrounding areas of Texas already pay their employees more than $15 and their prices are not even a dollar above normal. The increase is spread over the entire menu by the thousands of items sold every day, not just based on one or 2 Big Macs and fries...

The workers that are earning less then that now are a minority in that city of idiots. The do gooders already pay $10.00 for a cup of Starbucks in Seattle. The people that currently making $15.00 per hour will now want a raise. This will only hurt the low income earners, the Microsoft types won't even know it happened. I guess we will so how this little experiment works out. I think a lot of Seattle people will be shopping and dining outside the city before too long.

It will continue to go up as the value of the dollar goes down... We no longer have the gold standard or any other equity to back up the numbers printed on our bills... It makes sense that if the dollar is not worth as much today as it was yesterday, I am going to want more dollars for my service, product or labor... Higher minimum wages don't worry me as much as a worthless dollar in the worlds oil trade... The US is not energy independent and the American way of life depends on " other countries oil".. O says he wants to support and encourage domestic drilling to get us away from that dependence, while his administration beats the oil industry. If the situation where to become dire thru hyperinflation I do not think the US would be willing to go to war for cheeseburgers... However I have zero doubt we would go to war for oil...
